Reports from the Front – The Uprising

Another great little friendly tournament run by Totally CritHead Rob ‘Bobman’.  We had 8 players booked in – which was the capacity for the small social club room.  Unfortunately due to traffic issues we had a last-minute drop, so Rob took a bye in the first round.

Two days before the event the changes to Army went up!  I had already planned to have a last Hurrah! with the “old” JSA and now I needed to modify my lists.  I decided to not go back to the drawing board and completely re-write them, but when I started to try and simply rework them I found that the changes to the unit costs just didn’t add up.  3 Points extra for the O-Yoroi.  6 Points more for the new Kuroshi Rider over Asoka Kisuragi. 1 more point for the Tanko from the cheapest Haramaki (up from 22 to 23 – still a steal though!!!).  So while I managed to salvage my first “Biker Gang” list, my second list needed a complete rework as I couldn’t get a 10 order list with an O-Yoroi and a full 2 Domaru/3 Tanko Core Fireteam.

So the missions were (because we had used an old TAG Line code):

  • The Grid
  • Deadly Dance
  • Show of Force

Game 1

  • Mission: The Grid
  • Opponent: Jason “XiaoHouZi”
  • Faction: Yu Jing
  • List: A

So Jason was playing Yu Jing – so as soon as I saw him I shouted “Freedom!” and challenged him to a first round UPRISING! game.  After some trash talking, we gave each other a bow of respect and then the war began!

I won the initiative roll – and like a good JSA player, I chose turn order and to go first!

Turn 1 JSA

So setting up 5 bikes is always tricky!  I had set up so that they would have a reasonable chance of not tripping any serious ARO’s on their Impetuous Orders.  Jason had 3 ARO pieces.  A WarCor and Celestial Guard up on one high tower, and a Camo Marker on another.  I was convinced that it would be a Guilang Sniper.  So Yo Jimbo goes of first, getting an ARO from the War Cor but manages to put out smoke.  But because of the set up he goes one way, but the other bikers have to go the other (due to the Impetuous order heading for the target they can get to in the least orders – which too some working out!).  Next up the Aragoto Spitfire went out around the other side of the building up the eastern flank and tripped an ARO from the Camo marker – but he chose to idle.  The rest of the bikers followed, staying out of ARO.  Next I revealed Saito Togan, still concerned about that camo marker and threw smoke out to block the LoF of the Camo Marker.

The biker gang now had free reign to rev up the table.  In two co-ordinated orders they were almost in the Yu Jing DZ!  The spitfire then came out and presented an upclose target for the Camo Marker – which he did reveal not as a Guilang but as a Dao Fei Multirifle!  I was in good range with the spitfire and won the F2F but the Dao Fei tanked the ARM roll.

Not wanted to do that again, I moved my Keisotsu Missile Launcher up the stairs towards the roof and gained a LoF across the board on the Dao Fei, and vaporised him with two missile hits!  The Keisotsu then moved onto the top of the roof and vaporised the WarCor and Celesial Guard.

With no more ARO pieces on the table and 5 orders left the Aragoto could really go to work!  But before this Yo Jimbo (who was my Data Tracker) in the other order pool headed off the Designated target.  He got there in just an order, then moved in for the kill and a traitorous Ninja jumped out of Hidden Deployment and tried to Engage, but Jimmy just slicked him neatly in two!

Jimbo then moved past the Designated Target slicing her head off (Hard Rain style) and with one order left went on a suicide mission.  He road around the corner right into Base-to-base with the Hsein (probably the Lt), and took an ARO from two Monks with Chain Rifles and a Pheasant Rank with BSG.  The Hsein ARO’d with close combat and down went the dice.  Jimbo got one out of the two MA4 hits through, and the Hsein failed one of the two DA rolls, but Yo Jimbo failed everything else and was shredded.

With my eyes on taking down the Hsein I co-ordinated 2 Boarding Shotgun Aragoto and ran them in, just enough to see the Hsein out of cover, the plan being that the Hsein would only ARO F2F back against one.  Instead he laid a double Nano-Pulsar down.  My Aragoto BSG’s only got one dice each, one hit the other missed and the Hsein tanked the roll, and both Aragoto (BTS 0) when down!  Next up the Kuriashi Rider using its LT order decided to go for the Hsein.  It moved up enough to see the Hsein and he ARO’d again with the Nanopulsar, but when we put down the template we actually saw she was out of range (and the two Aragoto would have been as well).  We let that result stand but this time she go three shots of combi rifle fire off on the Hsein but he tanked the rolls.  She then zoomed into Close Combat!  The Hsein used MA 2 to reduce her from CC22 to 19 and I rolled a 20! Bah! Really wish she had MA.  The two Monks and Pheasent took her out with their ARO’s.  Last change I sent the Spitfire up to see the Hsein and this time he put him down!

I had one order left but after doing the Maths I realised if I took the Pheasent out he would probably go into retreat as he had 4 Monks, a Kanren, a Celestial Guard and a Pheasant left on the table.  So I dropped the Aragoto spitfire into Suppression Fire.

Turn 1 Yu Jing

So after a great first turn of biker mayhem, I had lost all my bikers but Jason was down to 3 Regular Orders in one pool and 4 Irregular Monks in the other.  He started with his Monk closest to the Aragoto and threw smoke to cover his approach.  He then traded up some command tokens to give him regular orders, ran through the smoke and chain rifled the Aragoto which went down, but the suppression fire missed!  The monk then continued to move up to get a LoF of Saito who managed to change face and then dodge the chain rifle into cover. He then walked on a Tiger Soldier on the East side of the table and moved him to take on Saito at -9’s and landed a CRIT!

For his last orders he walked on another Tiger Soldier on the West side straight into an ARO from a Keisotsu FO with flash pulse who missed.  He tried to shoot down the Keisotsu with his last order but the flash pulse blinded him!

Turn 2 JSA

So the fight was still on!  First up I moved the brand-new Fire Team Kempeitai Marksman Rifle with MSV2 up to take out the Tiger on the west side which he did with ease (No mimitism for you Tiger!).  I then moved the Missile Launcher up onto the roof and took a shot across at the other Tiger and Monk (due to the saturation zone) but missed the Tiger and the Monk got smoke down to block any more shots.  Clear now of any ARO’s the Keisotsu FO went to work and designated two antennae, and the Mushashi cut them down with his AP+EXP Dual Wield attacks!

Running low on orders (and now with no command tokens left to move troopers all into one group) I set up defensively to take on the Monks.

Turn 2 Yu Jing

The monks went off.  One ran towards the Keisotsu and the Kempeitai MMSR MSV2 took him down (no smoke for you!).  The other Monks moved up.  With only one command token he gave one of the monks a regular order and tried to take on a lone Keisotsu FO but he dodge.  Jason then moved up the Kanren up the eastern flank and got a LoF onto my ML.  The ML fluffed his roll and got taken down!  The Kanren then killed my designated target and caught one of my non-linked Keisotsu in the blast and put him down.

Turn 3 JSA

The Kanren’s Holoecho’s fired back up, so I sent a Fire Team Keisotsu after him (now only 4 members), and put one combi shot into each echo, managed to hit with all three and knock out the real Kanren.  The Kempeitai moved out and took out the closest Monk.

Turn 3 Yu Jing

In one last act of defiance, the last Tiger went for the Keisotsu fire team but got cut down by several ARO’s.

Final Score

Stuart –  Complete Victory 3  TP, 10 OP (More Antenna designated, more antenna destroyed, DT killed by data tracker), 118 AP

Jason – Defeat 0 TP, 2 OP (DT killed), 46 AP

The Uprising was successful – although the cost in Japanese lives was high!

Game 2

  • Mission: Deadly Dance
  • Opponent: John “Bossman”
  • Faction: USAriadna
  • List: B

This was the second time facing Johns USAriadna recently.  The first was doing Candy Crush using my Onyx, so I knew what to expect.  I won the roll, and took a gamble to choose to deploy second (hoping he might take turn order and go second – allowing me to get perfect placement with Shinobu) but he chose to go first.

After deployment we rolled zones.  I got closest to me on my left and John got closest to him on his left (in which he already had a Haris of 3 forward deployed Maruaders!)

Turn 1 USA

I had placed a few ARO pieces out.  John had made one Inferious Infiltration roll and placed a Grunt right near my O-Yoroi, but I had a Koala and a Mine on him if he move 1 mm forward.

John started with his Grunt HMG in the Fireteam and takes on both of my Tanko (one Blitzen and one Flamenspear) in a Haris with Mushashi.  He splits 3 and 2 dice and we are both at long range in cover so he’s on 8’s and I’m on 7’s.  The Flamenspear misses and takes a hit but tanks it and decides to drop prone.  Then Blitzen and Grunt both miss.  He then takes another order and puts 5 rounds into the Tanko, who fails to dodge and takes a wound but drops prone.  Repositioning the link he then goes for Mushashi (who I placed far to in the open) and kills him.  He then moves on to Yuroiko Oda with Panzerfaust, both in good range his 5 on 14’s vs my 2 on 15’s and she goes down and then gets a shot on the Kempeitai BSG and smokes him and the link is broken.  He then takes on the Keisotsu ML now not in a fire team and smokes him!  Lastly the Devil Dog and Antipode buddy move down the eastern flank.

Turn 1 JSA

Well the first turn didn’t go well!  I took 4 casualties and had 5 orders left on the table.  My Tanko link was broken so I use the Impetous orders to head off towards the Devil Dog and towards my zone.  I then reform the Haris (of 2) and move both into the zone, taking cover from the Devil Dog.

Next up I used my Lt order trying to bring my O-Yoroi out and got hit by a Grunt sniper, and fluffed the ARM roll of 5+! Plan B was needed.  So out came Shinobu.  I had placed her on the center line so I didn’t need to roll.  She used her marker state to run across (getting discovered) and made it to cover, but Rosie could still see her.  So, she unloaded 3 combi shots into Rosie’s face sending her dogged and dropped back into full cover.  She tries to throw a smoke grenade to block the Sniper shot to the O-Yoroi but fails!  With few orders left I decide to try and take Johns scoring zone!  He has three Maruaders with Forward Deployment who have ended up in the middle of his scoring zone.  So Shinobu throws smoke out (just so it falls next to them), then runs out and with the last order takes on two at once with MA5.  Her 25’s vs their 8’s.  CRIT! One of the Maruaders puts his knife in her face!  The other one gets Mono fileted in half.

Round 1 Score 1-1

Turn 2 USA

With nothing on the table in the open John now has to start to work a bit more for his kills!  He starts with his Grunt who makes an attack run, tripping a Koala, a mine and an ARO from the O-Yoroi and a Keisotsu FO, but he manages to kill the Keistosu with is Shotgun before the mine and Koala shred him.

Next up he moves the devil dog up.  Because one Tanko was in front of the other he could lay a chain rifle over the top of them, and get both.  The first time they failed to dodge and both took a wound!  The second time they managed to dodge and separate out.  After a couple more dodges (as I tried to eat through his order pool) he decided to sent in the Antipode into close combat.  The antipode attacked one Tanko, and the other Tanko engaged.  The antipode then CRIT! and took the 1st Tanko out.

Finnally John redeploys his sniper to cover the Devil Dog from the Tanko’s

Turn 2 JSA

Down to 4 orders…  The Tanko leads off with his Impetuous Order and Monofilaments the Antipode with a CRIT!  I can’t go for the Devil Dog though as the Sniper is covering that fire lane.

The O-Yoroi starts to move out, crossing the table but takes an ARO from the HMG Grunt and takes another wound.  Very close to the scoring zone (and 2 points), I decide to take the risk and do a move-move, with 2 long rang rifle ARO’s from the Marauders, but one of them hits and he failed his roll!  Epic fail!

Turn 2 Score 2-1.  The Devil Dog had enough points to beat the Tanko and so I didn’t get my zone.

Turn 3 USA

The situation with the Devil Dog has to end!  The Devil Dog runs in with his impetuous order and the Tanko CRITS and slices him in half!  It was a short-lived victory… On walks Van Zant and rifles the Tanko from behind killing him.  He then moves in on my Data Tracker (a Domaru – the last survivor of the Keisotsu Link), and after a couple of dodges by the Damaru, Van Zant manages to put him down.

Turn 3 JSA

Tabled! Nothing left to do…..

Final Score

John – Complete Victory.  3 VP.  7 OP (3 Zones controlled, More Zones in last turn 1, Secure HVT 1, Killed Data Tracker 2).  160 AP

Stuart – Defeat.  0 VP. 1 OP (1 Zone controlled). 0 AP

Game 3

  • Mission: Show of Force
  • Opponent: Rob “aphexblue”
  • Faction: Bakunin
  • List B

Rob won the initiative and due to the mission decided to take turn order and go 2nd.  This meant I got to take deployment and go 2nds and get a perfect placement for Shinobu, who managed to infiltrate inside a building in striking distance of Robs 5-man Moira link with Kusinagi, on a rooftop.

Turn 1 JSA

With 10 Orders all to spend on Shinobu it was time to get to work!  I spent my LT order on the Yoroi and cleared a Transductor Zond.  Then shinobu spent her 1st order throwing smoke down on the other side of a door.  2nd order opened the door.  3rd order tied to kill a Morlock in the smoke and failed, 4th order killed the Morlock.

5th order re-camo’d.  6th Order move/moved across the gap to the base of the building with the Moira’s.  7th order spec fired smoke onto the roof.  8th order climbed up into the smoke.  9th order killed a Moira Sniper.

fullsizeoutput_5e81 10th order Killed the Moira HMG.

Turn 1 Bakunin

With his key link team down to 3 orders and with no long range weapons left Rob needed Shinobu gone. So Chimera and three Pupnicks climbed up behind her and Chimera laid a Nanopulsar over her.  She failed her change face but tanked the BTS save.  Next he tried to use his Custodia with BSG on her, but she managed to throw smoke down!  Now in smoke his only choice was to move into CC.  Chimera and two of the three Pupniks made it into CC (while staying in the smoke not to be ARO’d my roof top missile launcher).  Chimera and 2 Pupniks faced Shinobu.  Shinobu’s MA5 was cancelled by natural born warrior and she was at -3 for iKol.  Rob rolled 1,1,4!  But I rolled a 3 and we tied!  He rolled again, getting 11 as his highest and Shinobu won and monofilamented Chimera.  With not many options left he sent a Morlock up onto the roof to get into ARO position with Shinobu for next turn.

Turn 2 JSA

The smoke cleared and Shinobu now needed to deal with a Custodia and a prone Morlock.  The Pupniks were still standing (disconnected) so blocked any other LoF.  So the Yoroi climbs a building and manages to get a long range shot on the Custodia.  It dodges the first burst, but gets hit by the second.  Shinobu then runs into CC with the Morlock who chain Rifles her, but she dodges, and then manages to kill the Morlock in CC.  She then throws smoke past the Pupniks and takes out Kusunagi and the last Moira both with CRITS! (I really had to think hard before killing the last Moira as he was very close to retreat!).

Turn 2 Bakunin

Rob was in Loss of Lieutenant and only just over thre retreat value of 75 points.  He started off by revealing a Camo’d Zero with Combi and takes a surprise shot at Shinobu and kills her! He revealed another zero and surpised shot one of the Tankos who took a wound and dropped prone.

With his last orders he moved his Morlocks closer into to the center tech coffin and moved his last Zero as a marker to next to the coffin.

Turn 3 JSA

The Tanko/Mushashi haris set off and Mushashi diced up the Zero.  They then continued and Mushashi managed to lay a chain riffle over two Morlocks and a mine, killing one and destroying the mine.  The Keisotsu ML did a discover/shoot and took out the camo’d Zero.  With only a single Morlock left guarding the objective I moved the O-Yoroi out, taking out the last zero that had killed Shinobu and moved onto the Tech Coffin, tanking the chain rifle hit from the Morlock.

Turn 3 Bakunin

Down to a single Morlock and Transductor Zond, and in retreat we called it there!

Final Score

Stuart – Complete Victory.  3 TP.  10 OP (More AP killed, Coffin Held at the end, Killed Data Tracker). 253 AP

Rob – Loss.  0 TP.  0 OP. 20 AP.

Final Standings

A great tournament, finishing 2nd on 6 TP, 21 OP and 371 AP.  Rob “Bobman”’s HaqqIslam took first place on 7 TP with a Bye, Complete Victory and Partial Victory managing to beat John’s USAriadna into third place!  A great result, but some poor deployment and not choosing to go first in my game vs John really cost me!  The best game was the Yu Jing UPRISING as the biker gang zoomed down the table with no regard for their lives!  Looking forward to getting the new Army Box and trying out more of the new profiles!
