Rise of the Imperial State @War of the Worlds VI

Another great tournament hosted by IBuyWargames in Woking.  We had 20 people from across the southeast and beyond, including some of the top ITS ranking players, and finalists from the UK Masters.

In the few days before the tournament I really struggled to decide what to play.  I know my JSA is very competitive and is my first love of infinity!  After playing Yu Jing for most of last year – I had some cracking lists – including the triple tiger (which I had just painted). So why did I choose to go with Imperial State Service? Everyone has to start somewhere!   It’s easy to turn up to each tournament with the same list and units – Shinobu, Haramaki etc.  and I still really enjoy playing them, but part of getting to be a good Infinity player is to recognise and counter different styles of army.  Learning a whole new faction was a good way to look at the game in a different way.

I started slowly building up my ISS about a year ago.  Although it’s a sectorial of Yu Jing, it’s a very different faction.  Some units of course cross over – but in reality, a lot of the units you see in ISS never get played in Yu Jing, so it feels very different.  It has a real spread of different Fire team options both core (Bao Troops/Pheasant Rank, Wu Ming/Zhanying, Crane/Celstial guard, Celestial Guard/Kuang Shi) as well as Haris (Hsein/Zhanying and Bao/Pheasant Rank).

The increase availability of REM’s gives them access to 2 Rui Shi, 2 Lu Dian and 3 Husong Yukong Total Reaction HMG remotes. Then there is the availability 3 Su Jian, which can also Fireteam: Duo!!  Throw into this a scattering of Aleph units including the best Engineer/Doctor in the game (and ISS’s only doctor/engineer), the Sophotect, the Garuda Tacbots with AD: Combat Jump, and Dakini’s.  Round that off with a selection of mercenaries including bounty hunters (Miranda Ashcroft, Father Sforza, Authorised Bounty Hunter) and the new CSU, it makes an impressive and unique toolbox.

Every faction has its weaknesses.  There is a lack of Infiltrating Camo – only the single availability Ninja, and the only other camo unit is Lunah. They have only one Engineer/Doctor (Sophotect), although the Celestial Guards and Dakini’s get a paramedic.  ISS also have no TAG’s (as Scar Face has been removed after ITS Season 8).  The unit that really sells ISS to lots of people is the Kuang Shi.  Availability 8, regular, extremely impetuous (but can be place in a fire team to cancel this) and all for 5 points with a chain rifle – these have often been described as the Kuang Shi order battery!

I started out building up my ISS with the excellent new ISS Starter.  The new sculpts, especially the heavy infantry Crane Rank really look great.  Even the line troopers, the Celestial Guards have a great look about them, very different compared to the Zhanshi.

After the starter, I went for the Bao Troops box (MSV in a can!), the Dire Foes 6: Defiant truth for Xi Zhuang (and who wouldn’t want those MadTraps) and several blisters including; Pheasant (Red Fury) and Hsein Multi Rifle (mainly to have a different colour scheme Hsein from my Yu Jing HMG).

The Sophotect is of course a must in ISS and thanks to Shae Konnitt, I got a split box deal for a couple of YudBots.

Finally, I picked up an old Garuda and the lovely new Zhanying Hacker and Kanren Hacker (and I had to buy another Kanren Breaker Pistol!).

Starting a whole new army also poses a question about painting.  Rather than stay with my Yu Jing colour scheme I was inspired by a colour scheme I’d seen to paint then in the grey and cyan, Shence scheme shown in the HS3N book.  This did give me the excuse to buy some different versions of miniatures I already had and paint them again!  ISS also had access to some interesting mercenaries including my favourite Infinity sculpt Miranda Ashcroft.

Poor irregular Miranda had seen very little game play in my Yu Jing army (although she did wipe out an entire Alguacil link team in a tournament vs Chris ‘MeekRebel’), but then Operation Wotan landed and her new ISS Ashcroft Hunting Party profile was launched!  Now she was regular and a specialist for 24pts! Finally, the new profile and irresistible sculpt for Major Lunah dropped.

There are still a couple of things to buy!  Next on my list is the Wu Ming box and the Dakini Box.  Still need a Father Sforza. I’ve held out on buying the Celestial Guard SWC box as they are old sculpts and look poor compared to their newer brethren.  Although I have 4 Kuang Shi (1 box) I keep wanting to buy another – and apparently there is a new sculpt on the horizon!  Finally, there is the temptation to buy another Yaozie box for a 2nd Rui Shi and Lu Dian, and another box of Yaokong Remotes for another Husong, and 2 more Su Jian!

I had played a few friendly games during Operation Wotan and in a couple of ITS Showdown events at Hydra which went well, and now felt it was time to take them to the big league of a full ITS tournament!

Game 1

I knew the Avatar was coming!  I thought I was prepared!  Turns out, I was wrong… No one is prepared for an Avatar (Except Shinobu who kills them in turn 1.  Damn, I’m not playing JSA)!  Combine Army has become more popular recently, due to the new single combat group rules, and the Avatar has got even worse with the addition of Fatality Level 1.  Now the 10 order Combined army list has become more competitive.  I decided to take it on with my 10 order list of ISS!

Martin won initiative and chose to take 1st turn, a dead certainty!  So I set up second.  Martin put down a scatter of cheaper units and then held back two with Strategos!  The table was a little bit of a hodgepodge table of Nercomunda style MDF walkways and was a little light on ground terrain (but I can only blame myself as I set it up from stuff in the store!).  I put out my Pheasant/Bao link defensively with two MSV 2 snipers on over-watch.  The Hsein HMG and two Zhanying look the eastern flank, ready to move up to take the flag.  My CSU watched the right for drop troopers, and then finally a little bit of trickery.  I placed my Kanren Killer Hacker and two holoechoes disguised under Holoprojector Level 1 as a Kanren, Boarding shotgun.  Finally, down went the Avatar of the East flank and a HMG Q-Drone.

Martin selected his Avatar as his Data Tracker.  Mine was my Hsein.

Turn 1 Combined Army

Martin started out with his extremely impetuous Daturazi.  As planned one ran straight into the LoF of my Bao Sniper and had his head taken off.  The other managed to keep out of LoF.  Then in came the Avatar.  First up he moved to take on my Bao MSV2 Sniper.  He moved out of cover and moved to an angle to remove my cover.  His burst 4 Multi HMG with shock on 18’s to my burst 2 MSV2 Multi Sniper on 18’s!  Bang, down went my sniper, shocked dead!  Well that didn’t go to plan.  Next, he moved around the eastern side and took on my Hsein.  He had guessed he was my Lt.  Again, he moved so he had no cover and neither did I.  Burst 4 Multi HMG on AP mode vs burst 2 HMG with MSV2.  Bang, bang, bang.  Three wounds, no armour saves.  This was painful.  Then he had the easy pickings – and moved to take out the Zhanying Hacker and Zhanying Haris Sensor.  Finally, he moved back into his half of the table, and moved Kiss and bit into the centre and shot a pitcher into the middle of my Bao link!

Turn 2 ISS

It’s fair to say turn 1 sucked.  Despite the right tools for the job, I had been beaten down by superior dice!  But I wasn’t out of the fight.  My Chain of Command Pheasant was now in charge!  I started out by moving up my Kanren who was on a walkway above bit and kiss.  She moved into 8”, Bit and Kiss delayed (as I was a marker), and I dropped a burst 3 Surprise Shot Trinity.  Two onto Bit and one through Kisses repeater onto his EVO Remote.  The EVO went down, and Bit (who used Maestro) took two hits but with her BTS 6 shrugged both off!  I switched to Red Rum and put three more orders worth of attacks into Bit before finally she failed a roll!  With only two orders left, I moved my remaining Bao Sniper to take a shot on the Avatar.  B2 MSV2 Multi-sniper in cover on 12’s vs ARO B1 Multi HMG, explosive mode in cover on 15’s. KABOOM, bits of my Bao Sniper rained down from the sky…  Lastly, I took a risk and spent my Lt order on my Pheasant.  She took a long shot using a combi and X-Visor and put down his Ikadron.

Turn 2 Combined Army

I had reduced Martin down to 5 orders (plus 1 for his Strategos).  He ran out his Daturazi towards my Bao, but I had no ARO’s left.  Next up he moved Dr Worm up to his E-Drone and a baby worm towards Bit and in the next two orders got both back in the game!  Finally, he went after my Kanren with Bit for another round, and once again my Kanren put her down, this time dead! He moved his Daturazi up on my link, and he got stuck down my a MadTrap!  Finally, he walked in a Rasyat on the east table edge – I think just to get his order on the table.

Turn 2 ISS

So still fighting!  I started off with my Kanren again.  I needed to put down the E-Drone which had access to Exile and could use that on my link team.  Two attempts later vs Breakwater I gave up!  Plan B, I used the Pheasants Lt order, broke the link and split fire on the Repeater and stuck down Daturazi, missing the repeater and the Daturazi tanked the ARM save.  Next, I used a Bao with Shotgun (not linked) and split fire, taking out the repeater but not the Daturazi which saved again.  Running low on orders I gave up on shooting the Daturazi, reformed the link and went after the Rasyat with the Pheasant and put him down.  Last order was to set up defensively…. Ready for the avatar.

Turn 3 Combined Army

He was coming… The Avatar…This was going to hurt.  First up he takes on the Pheasant…down she goes.  Then he moves in close taking on a Bao Shotgun, and Sepsitorises him, ignoring the shots from him and the Kanren on the roof behind him.  He turns around and Sepsitorises her!  All that’s left is one Bao MSV2 Shotgun, who manages to put a wound on him before going down.  With his last order, he picks up the flag!

Turn 3 ISS

In retreat.  In a final act of desperation, the CSU takes on the Avatar at range (you never know, I only needed two crits…) and predictably does down.  Wipe out!

Final Score

Martin Complete Victory.  3 TP.  8 OP (Captured Flag with Data tracker and defended his flag). 258 VP.

Stuart Loss.  0 TO. 0 OP. 0 VP…. Everybody’s dead man!


Game 2

  • Mission: PowerPack

Tim was bringing a new Nomad list with lots of different options, which I knew would include some AD: Combat Drop!  PowerPack is a really interesting mission, something I’d like to see more of in future ITS.  Messing the deployment zones and rules really makes the game a bit different.  For this game, I wanted to use my high order count, specialist heavy list.  Also I have the Garuda TacBot ready to walk in on the back 24” which are not in the enemy DZ!

I lost initiative and Time decided to take 2nd turn – very valuable in this scenario.  I then chose deployment and went first – the best of both worlds!

After deployment Tim chose his Kriza Boracs to be his Data Tracker and I chose my Crane Rank.

Turn 1 ISS

We both had set up knowing that PowerPack would allow AD troops to walk in the back.  My CSU covered my rear.  Tim had a Reaktion Zond guarding his back line as well as a Kriza Boracs MK12 360 visor!  Infinity is like chess with dice.  You have to pick your line of attack and think a few moves ahead, like chess, but knowing that it does come down to harsh dice.  After sizing up his defences for a few minutes I had a plan.  I had started the game with my 4 Kuang Shi in a link with the Celestial Guard so they didn’t go impetuous.  Then spent the command token to switch the fire team.

First off, the Crane X-Visor Spitfire in a Core Fireteam moved up enough to shoot the Reaktion Zond.  Due to my movement path, he was able to shoot be at 25” while I shot him at 24” so we both were in good range.  Dice rolled Burst 5 Spitfire in cover on 16’s vs Burst 4 HMG in cover on 11’s, and the Zond went down, destroyed!  Good start.

Now that was cleared I could AD combat drop in my Garuda with shotgun.  I used the Celestial Guard Hacker to launch Assisted Jump, then dropped him in on 15’s.  Tim’s hacker tried to hack transport aircraft, but the Garuda managed to land.  First murder was a doctor hiding in the building.  Next, I went to move further but Pi-Well had a LoF trough 2 doors to see me.  We exchanged shots for a couple of orders and just managed to keep missing ODD vs Mimitism and cover, so I decided to change tac.

In the other combat group Major Lunah in camo set off.  She climbed a building and then climbed onto the roof tops, but was discovered by a War Cor, so next order she shot him ful of viral rounds.  From there she drew a LoF on a prone Moderator on a roof top and gave him a face of viral ammo.  Next, she oved to see Pi-Well from the roof and got a face of flash pulse!

Time to change plan.  Using the Garuda I was able to move out of Pi-Wells LoF, exchanging shots which both missed.  Then it moved to get a Morlock in LoF who was standing just in front of the Kriza, without getting the Kriza in LoF.  Next apply Boarding Shotgun. The Morlock went down, and the Kriza took a wound from the blast template.  Next the Garuda went for the Kriza, getting into short range with his Shotgun and taking an ARO from Pi-Well and the Kriza, rolling 18’s on the Boarding shot and got beaten and went to Unconcious Level 1.

With my last couple of orders, I arranged my fire team defensively, moving back the Crane and placed a Celestial Guard FO on a roof top.  Last, I moved a Husong Yaokong TR HMG to cover the west side.

Turn 1 Nomads

Tim led off with some extremely impetuous Morlocks.  One ran straight out to the Celestial Guards and got wasted.  The other ran out and tied with his smoke grenade throw.

Next up he activated Pi-Well.  Pi-Well moved up in the Husong TR HMG and was able to take him down at close range using his ODD and cover.  He then tried to shoot it again to destroy it by failed!

Net one of his Camo tokens on the roof, a Prowler with Spitfire, tried to attack my Celestial Guard FO but got a flash pulse to the face, CRIT!

Next up he dropped in a Hell Cat with Spitfire using AD: Combat drop. The Hell Cat engaged my CUS but he made his ARM save and ducked back.  With his last order, the Hell Cat then tried to go after the Sophotect, on my backlines.  He landed a hit but the Sophotect went to NWI and ducked back.

Turn 2 ISS

First up the Kuang Shi all went running towards the Hell Cat.  They didn’t get there so I spend the first order running one up to him and gunned him down with pistol fire!

Next the Celestial Guard Link set off.  The Celestial Guard on the roof managed to take out the Prowler with a shotgun.  The link then took out the surviving Morlock and set off toward the first antenna, and Xi Zuang flipped it.  They then moved on further but ran into a camo Zero killer hacker who killed the Celestial Guard Hacker.  So, the Crane Rank moved up on the hacker and hacked his head off with a DA CCW!

On the other side, the Miranda Ashcroft hunting party went after Pi-Well, moving up on him and managing to take him down, and then did a Coup de grace on him for Extreme Prejudice.  Miranda then flipped the antenna on the west side.

Finally, team Crane headed for the Console and took up positions around it.

Turn 2 Nomads

Tim was down to four orders and decided to throw everything and the Crane to knock him down.  Zoe tried and got gunned down.  Another Moderator tried and died.  The Kriza was too far away, and the only other thing left was a Zero minelayer.

Out of time for a third round we ended the game there

Final Score

Game 3

I had only played Morats once before and I remember that they didn’t have too much camo, so I decided to go with my 16 order List B without MSV.

I won Initiative this time and decided to deploy second and Nick chose to go 1st.

Turn 1 Morats

Nick lead of with an Infiltrating Zerat Sniper he had placed high up.  It moved up to take a shot on my Celestial Guard FO but didn’t manage to land a shot before being blinded!

Next, he activated his Vanguard Fireteam.  I chose to not take an ARO with Lunah hoping he would waste some orders discovering her, but he roll first time.  He then used the Missile Launcher and took her out!

He moved up his Rodok on the high walkways to take on my Husong TR HMG but it out gunned him – but he still made his ARM save, and decided not to press that attack.

He reformed the link with a different Vanguard leaving the ML behind in his ARO nest and headed up the table towards the eastern antenna.  He then walked on a Rasyat, ahead of the link team and use him to toss some zero-visibility smoke.  The Vanguard’s tried to flip the antenna but failed.

Turn 1 ISS

I let my Kuang Shi lose to run up towards his Vanguards as there were no ARO’s on them.  The Vanguard Missile Launcher had my FireTeam in its sights so I couldn’t activate all of them so I dropped the Celestial Guard Hacker out of the team and launcher Assisted Jump and I tried to AD: Combat drop the Garuda TacBot behind his Missile Launcher on a 15 and rolled a 16! The Garuda scattered off the table and so I placed him on the western board edge where he could support that side.

Changing plans to a more direct approach, the Celestial Guard with smoke Grenade Launcher (again not in the link) launched smoke.  It took two attempts but it went down.  The FireTeam could now reform and move up.  The Crane Rank Spitfire emerged from the smoke and took on the Vanguard Missile launcher in good range, taking him out, then moved up and took out the Rasyat.  The team then edged around and managed to take out one of the Vanguards in his FireTeam causing it to drop to 4 Morat team!

On the other side of the table Miranda Ashcroft and her Bounty Hunter went hunting for the Zerat.  The bounty hunter climbed up to his level and took him out with a close-range boarding shotgun.  The Husong TR HMG fired at the Rodok who and tried to kill him last turn and took him out and then moved up further on the walkways to engage Nicks Q-Drone HMG.  Both at good range, dice rolled, but my Husong went down, victim of the Combined Armies superior mimitism equipped remotes!

Turn 2 Morats

Apparently, they were in Loss of Lieutenant but didn’t care as they were Morats!  Nick did spend a couple of command tokens to move up his Q-Drone HMG and take on my Kuang Shi who had been left in the open.  In an awesome show on luck the 3 Kuang Shi who were attacked either dodged or tanked about 10, damage 15 armour saves!  Nick quite rightly despaired at this probability!

He decided to move his Vanguard Fire team around to take on my Crane team from the side, but again ran into the Kuang Shi, who again dodged or made ARM saves.  While at the same time he took down one of my Celestial Guards but then Xi Zhuang managed to take down one on the Vanguards in the ARO. Running low on orders, he moved up a Kurgat with mines on the western side and placed a mine on the console there.

Turn 2 ISS

My 4 Kuang Shi were set to run straight at the Q-Drone, so I spent 4 of my 10 orders to cancel their impetuous orders (which in hind sight may have been a mistake!).  A Celestial Guard FO with Boarding Shotgun led the Fireteam right into CQB with the Vanguards.  Shooting at burst 3 with a template on 20’s the Celestial Guard chewed right through the entire link and Treitak Anyat.  On the last shot he managed to line up the last Vanguard with the Q-Drone and take them both down with a blast template! Xi Zhuang then flipped the eastern antenna.

On the other side the Ashcroft hunting party went after the Kurgat.  The Bounty Hunter stepped out taking the mine head on, failed the ARM save, and didn’t manage to take down the Kurgat.  Miranda them came around to finish the job putting the Kurgat down.  She then moved into contact to control the Western Antenna, taking down an E-Drone on the way in a long-range exchange, tried to flip the antenna but failed.

At this point I realised I had messed up! Nick only had Bit and Kiss left on the table and would be in retreat so the game was going to end at the end of his next turn! (Note although Morats aren’t effected by retreat, their faction can still enter a retreat state which in this scenario ended the game on the next turn.)   I only had my LT order left so the Crane moved to control the eastern antenna.

Turn 2 Morats

Bit took an SMG shot at Miranda but didn’t manage to hit her and the game ended there!

Final Score

Stuart Partial Victory.  2 TP.  3 OP (Activated one antenna, controlled two).  231 VP

Final Standings

After a crushing defeat in game 1 and the feet of an Avatar who stomped me into the ground, my ISS bounced back and finished 8th out of 20.  I really should have managed to get up to 4th place and get a 10-0 win in the last game but my over zealous ISS forces were far too brutal in their oppression of the Morats and sent the MAF into retreat before being able to secure all the objectives!  A valuable lesson in what not to do!

Overall a great tournament with some great nail biting games and excellent opponents.  Over the three games we only needed the TO’s help once (I learned that you can declare an invalid ARO, and its validity is only checked in the conclusion step, when Martins E-Drone launched Breakwater, which requires you to be the target of a hacking attack, before my Kanren used her 2nd Short Skill to hit it with Red Rum.)

[EDIT: So It turns out I was right, you can’t declare ARO’s which are invalid, they have to be  valid at the time of declaration.  Also you can’t use BreakWater is you have not yet been the target of a Hacking Attack.

E.g. 1st Short Skill: My Kanren moves inside the hacking area via a repeater and out of LoF (choosing not to use stealth) of an E-Drone EVO Hacker.  ARO: The E-Drone can’t breakwater as I’ve not yet targeted it in a hacking attack, but it can Brain Blast.  2nd Short Skill The Kanren targets the E-Drone with Red Rum.]

Andy “Riker” walked away again with 1st place in both the tournament and the best painted army with his stunning Yu Jing, bagging both a £30 voucher and a £5 voucher! (Which he used to buy Zelda Monopoly… oh well!)
