War of the Worlds V

Another early start and Chris “MeekRebel” and I set out at the crack of dawn across Kent and London to Woking for War of the Worlds V.  Despite failing our Infiltration rolls and being delayed by Speculo Killers on the train, we managed to get into Woking and were half way to the venue when we got the intel that the venue had an emergency change due to a double booking by the venue!  Credit to Keith but he still managed to get 10 quality tables into the shop, ‘I Buy Wargames’ – and real thanks for those guys who had to drop out as our capacity dropped from 26 to 20.

The tournament has a team element as well!  We formed 5 teams.  As there were only two of us in Team FolkestoneMeta, we adopted Keith and another player.  The HATE team had a civil war with two teams of 4!  The idea was that no members of the same team would play each other.

My Lists

Planning for this tournament was much harder than it looked.  I really didn’t want to risk my favourite Domaru/Haramaki HI link team in Transmission Matrix with so many repeaters about!  Hunting Party was hard for JSA and you didn’t really want to have specialists that the opponent could Hunt Down.  Finally, for Com Centre you needed specialists in spades and then some!  Compromises had to be made!

Game 1

I think this is the first time I have every played a Shavasti Expeditionary Force (SEF) player so this was a really interesting game!  I won the initiative roll and chose to Deploy Second – why?  Well I has hoping my opponent would then take the chance to go first, so I would be able to more easily control the antenna zones and the end of each round, but Rob decided to go second!  This wasn’t bad either as I could then deploy after my opponent and get in my alpha strike with Shinobu!

Rob set up… and he had only 3 units, and a load of camo tokens!  The only troopers he deployed were a Haris of 2 Gwailos and Corax Hasht.

I deployed my Keisotsu Fire Team on the south-western antenna and my Raiden HRL on Tokusetsu Doctor by the south-eastern antenna.

Rob held back a hidden deployment unit, and I placed down Shinobu just outside his DZ and failed the Infiltration Plus roll! So Shinobu when on the eastern board edge on my 12” line.  I named her as my Data Tracker and Rob named one of his Gwailos.

Turn 1 JSA

Rob dropped two orders from my primary order pool.  The eastern side of the table was a Haqqislam style enclave, and on the other side in an arc way was Rob’s HVTarg.  So I fed orders into Shinobu who moved through the enclave using the cover and avoiding ARO’s, then snuck up behind the HVTarg and sliced her in half with her monofilament blade! 3 OP’s!

I had used about 5 orders on this and I didn’t have enough left for her to reach Hasht’s team, so I rearranged my Keisotsu link, moving the missile launcher to the roof. I moved the Rui Shi up to cover the central building in which was the middle antenna. Then I placed the Rui Shi, Shinobu and my spare Keisotsu not in the link into suppression.

With the remaining group I just moved the doctor up on top of the wall around the enclave to be next to the Raiden.

Turn 2 SEF

Rob kicked off with Hasht’s team moving towards the centre of the table and into range of the Raiden.  Hasht’s exchanged shots with the Raiden with his burst 5 spitfire.  The Raiden managed to land a hit that Hasht ARM saved.  Then the Raiden manage to make a save.  I decided to take a risk and targeted one of the Gwailos, and taking the spitfire shot uncontested.  The Raiden’s HRL burnt down the Gwailos to unconscious/seed embryo state but he got knocked unconscious.

Rob then moved up a camo token which was in the central building but on a walkway with no ladder access, and moved him into the range of the transmission antenna.  He finally revealed a Shrouded and mived into the central buiding out of sight of my Rui Shi and placed a mine, then moved back outside and placed a mine to cover Hasht’s team.

Round 1 Scoring – 2 antenna for JSA, 3 antenna for SEF so 2 OP to SEF.

Turn 2 JSA

I wasn’t too worried about losing the first round of scoring, as my force was still mostly intact.  1st order was to use the Tokusetsu Doctor to heal the Raiden.  I launched Assisted Fire Support ware on the Rui Shi and moved it first to discover/shoot the mine laid by the Shrouded.  It then moved around the corner and managed to gun down Hasht and the other Gwailos (using shock to kill them).

Shinobu then moved out on the Camo token which was guarding the North-eastern antenna.  Rob revealed another shrouded from Camo state but Shinobu managed to put him down with her Combi.  She then ran up and stabbed the spawn-embryo.

There was still a mine in the central building so I revealed Saito Togan and he ran into the room dodging, set of the mine but made the roll.  I moved the Rui Shi into the building and placed it on suppression to cover him.

Turn 2 SEF

Rob started by hatching a seed trooper by the NW antenna.  He then decided to bring out the big guns!  He revealed a TO Camo Noctifer Missile Launcher on the other side of the table and fired a missile at my Keisotsu ML.  I was shooting back only on burst 1 as a tree (Low Visibility, Saturation Zone) was between use, but the Keisotsu won the roll and blew the Noctifer into chunks!

Back on the NE antenna he revealed another Noctifer with a spitfire and managed to gun down Shinobu!  This meant he controlled the NE Antenna!

We started to count up the central antenna points and I realised I’d forgotten about the spawn embryo left by the burnt Gwailos.  Along with the camo token still on the walkway was work more than Saito Togan!

Scoring Round 2 – 2 Antenna for JSA, 3 for SEF! So 2 more points to SEF.

Turn 3 JSA

So, things were not going great!  I decided to mobilise my Keisotsu Fire Team and push forward towards the NW antenna guarded by the Seed-Solider.  The Keisotsu HMG chewed him up in one shot, and the team moved on past the central building.  On a balcony on the rear of the building was a camo token which I assumed was a mine belonging to the other camo token, but it was another Shrouded!  He took out the Keisotsu ML first.  Then Yuriko Oda went after him with her combi and went down.  Finally, my HMG Keisotsu opened up on him and he dodged prone, out of LoF.  This didn’t leave me with enough orders to get the team up to the NW antenna, so I shifted tac and decided to abandon the central antenna and moved Saito Togan up to the NE antenna slicing up the Noctifer Spitfire that had killed Shinobu.  The Rui Shi then moved up to support him.  Finally, I used my Lt order to move my Aragoto up to the central building to cover the central antenna.

Turn 3 SEF

Running low on orders now, Rob threw out some hail Mary’s.  He started by standing up the Shrouded and doing a Forward Observe roll on my Keisotsu HMG and succeeded and scored his classified.  He then revealed his Lieutenant a Camo’d Asawang Combi Rifle behind a hill near the NE antenna.  He moved up and took a shot at Saito who threw smoke at his feet and won the face to face.  He then moved up towards the Antenna, the Rui Shi got an ARO on him threw the smoke and he returned Combi fire, but both missed!  Finally he spinted into CC with Saito and after the clash of blades Saito went down! BUT the Rui Shi ARO’d as well and landed the shot putting him down with shock, dead!  Epic finish.

This was a real cracker of a game that was full of sneaky Shavasti shenanigans! Final result was a draw!

Game 2

  • Faction: HaqqIslam
  • Mission: Hunting Party
  • List: B

Hunting Party was a mission I had put a lot of thought into.  JSA only had 2 Veteran Troopers (Oniwaniban’s and Shikami) and no Elite or HQ troopers to get the additional Adhesive Launchers, but I had decided to go for neither!

I won the initiative roll and decided to select turn order and go first!  I deployed all my force with Shinobu held back and then Nick deployed his forces mostly in cover with only an Al Fasid HRL on ARO duty on a building.

I passed my Shinobu roll and placed her right on his DZ near Saladin.  Nick placed his hold back, and then realised he had completely forgotten to use Strategos to make be not have a hold back!

Turn 1 JSA

I started by straight away revealing Shinobu and moving 8” as a marker state towards Saladin. She then moved the final 2” and engaged him in close combat, not with her Monofilament, but with her stun pistols.  Martial Arts 4, burst 2 stun pistols with a CC of 25. Saladin went to IMM-1.  But as he was NWI I was stuck!  I couldn’t knock him unconscious, and if I activated Shinobu again in his ZoC or LoF he would reset…. So I disengaged enough to see his Naffatun Engineer and moved back into base contact with Saladin.  The Naffatun shot at me with is Rifle and I shot back with Shinobu’s combu and put him down, and Saladin made his reset roll.  So now Shinobu had to spend another action shooting him in CC and critted him again.

Not able to do anything more with Shinobu I activated the Haramaki Link.  The Missile Launcher took the lead and outranged the Al Fasid at 38”, scoring two hits and blowing him to bits.  The team then moved up to take the centre ground.  I did a co-ordinated order and placed my supporting Rui Shi and Keisotsu on suppression fire to guard the flanks.

Finally I moved up my Engineer towards the eastern console and went on suppression.

Turn 1 HaqqIslam

Nick kicked off with Tarik!  Up he moved towards my Haramaki and lines up a shot on the Missile Launcher with Spitfire.  I’m on 13’s with Burst 2 (at 0-mods range) and he’s at 13’s (+3 range) and Burst 4 – but the Haramaki lands one missile and Tarik fails all his ARM and is reduced to Salsa!  He then moved up a Asawira to cover a corner.

Nick finally reveals a TO Camo Taureg Assault Hacker and moves up to take the western console, making the role.

Turn 2 JSA

Neko Oyama led the charge of the Haramaki.  He moves up on the Tuareg Assault Hacker using Stealth, goes round the corner and punches him.  The Tuareg ARO’s with Carbonite and manages to win and IMM-1 my Lt!  So another Haramaki comes around the corner and this time manages to punch out the Taureg, and then Stun’s him on the floor.  Neko then Resets.  All of this has taken a ton of orders.  I manage to move up the Haramaki and take down the Asawira at the corner, and take out Leila Sharif.

The Engineer then runs up to the eastern console.

Turn 2 HaqqIslam

With only a few orders left, Nick reveals a camo’d prone Farzan on top of a walkway about the link team.  He moves up only to see the Haramaki with Light Shotgun and takes a shot but he makes the ARM save.  He takes another shot but this time the Haramaki puts him down!

Nick then tries to run his doctor out across the field of fire to heal Leila but gets cut down by the Haramaki.

Turn 3 JSA

I reselect Neko Oyama as my Lt (which is odd but it works!) and I spend two command tokens to swap my hacker with a Keisotsu in my 1st combat group and then move up my hacker towards the west console.  On the way he Data Scans and Telemetry’s the unconscious Taureg, then moves up and WP’s the consol.

The Tokusetsu Engineer manages to WP the eastern console.

Finally, the Haramaki link moves to take down the last Haqq unit, a Baggage bot.

Turn 3 HaqqIslam

In retreat now and only with Saladin left, the game ends there.

Game 3

  • Opponent: Andy “Riker”
  • Faction: Yu Jing
  • Mission: Comm Centre
  • List: A

Andy and I had played for the first time at Totally Crit XI, and that had been a really tough game which he had won. I won initiative and decided to take turn order and go first to get an effective alpha strike.  I set up all my troopers spread out to allow my specialists to get to the antennas.

It’s always an interesting game playing a faction you know really well.  As Andy deployed his force I was able to count up how many points he had down on the table, and spot exactly what his units were.  Once deployed I knew that the Hsein HMG was his only Lt choice and that the Imperial Agent Pheasant Rank with Madtraps was his Chain of Command.  I also knew he was short of about 60-70 points.  He had a camo token down so that was either a Dao Fei, or it was a Guilang and there was a Ninja Killer Hacker in TO somewhere!  The complete opposite of the first game where I knew nothing!

I sent Andy off and picked my spot for Shinobu and then failed the roll!  So Shinobu started on the eastern board side at the edge of my DZ, but I did choose her to be my Data Tracker.  Andy placed his holdback, a Husong TR HMG placed to cut a line across the oard and stop me reaching his HVTarg.  Andy chose a Kuang Shi on the same side as my HVTarg to be his Data Tracker.

Round 1 JSA

Andy knocked two orders off my main pool.  I decided to really push for the HVTarg and sent Shinobu off.  She moved across the board taking two orders then throwing smoke to block LoF from the TR HMG and by the 4th order got a shot on Andy’s HVTarg at good range, but he critted the dodge, and duck back 2”.  Another order and Shibobu get a second shot at her and put her down to unconscious.

Next up the Keisotsu link team went to work and the Keisotsu ML got a bead on the TR HMG at long range and blasted it to unconscious level 2.

I didn’t have many orders left to get to a better target with Shinobu so I just backed her up and jumped onto a walkway to take cover.

With my other pool I revealed Saito and threw smoke over the central console on my side (which I didn’t really need to do…) and then the Tokusetsu Doctor moved up and WP’d it.  The Tokusetsu Engineer moved up to the SW console which was on a walkway and WP’d that as well.

Last order, the Rui Shi and supporting Keisotsu went on co-ordinated suppression with a command token.

Round 1 Yu Jing

Andy lead off with his impetuous troopers.  My Raiden HRL appeared to take a shot at one Kuang shi and missed, but then managed to nuke a Monk coming up the west side.  Next he moved up his Hsein to take on my Raiden….. This was exactly what happened in the last game…. They exchanged fire and my Raiden made his ARM.  A second exchange of fire and the Raiden when down unconscious with a Servant Doctor right next to him.  I hadn’t realised that my Engineer was too exposed and in the open, and another HMG burst from the Hsein vapourised him!

Andy’s next move was to load up his Rui Shi with support ware, neatly bisected my WarCor and then moved in on my Keisotsu ML.  He got a LoF and was just on 24”!  Rolling 15’s on 4 dice vs my 2 dice on 13’s I though he was toast but I beet his roll and the Rui Shi failed all three explosive armour saves and was completely scrapped!

His last move was to place his Hsein on suppression.

Round 2 JSA

The Hsein was a big problem and I felt I had to deal with it!  So I used the impetuous order on my Aragoto Lt and revved up the table into good Combi range and opened up on the Hsein, but got put down!

Plan B, I moved my servant bot over to the Raiden and healed him, and in the process the YaoZao took an ARO from the Hsein who broke the suppression to hit him.   All healed the Raiden stood up, took a shot at the Hsein, and he put the Raiden down again!

Plan C? I moved the link team up, bringing the Keisotsu ML along.  He got LoF onto the Hsein and….yep… got put down.

Plan D! I moved the Keisotsu Hacker into range of the rest of the Fire Team and spend the command token to reform the Fire Team again.  Then they moved across the table, bringing Yuriko Oda into range on the Hsein and she shot off two AP/EXP PanzerFausts at him, hit him once and he failed all three ARM saves on 9+’s.  Finally, some luck, but I was nearly out of orders.  With the last two the Keisotsu moved up the ramp onto the large western platform where the W console was.  With no orders left, I broke the link and used my Lt order, the Chain of Command Kempetai to WP the console but failed!  I spent the last command token to reform the team.

Round 2 Yu Jing

With all my ARO pieces down, Andy now had a clear run on his side of the table.  The central raised walkways created a barrier that my link team couldn’t see past.  His Kuang Shi Data Tracker moved up and then I realised I have placed my HVTarg in a place where he could just about get a shot off along the eastern board edge.  The Kuang Shi took a hit from a supressing Keisotsu Combi but saved the ARM save.  We then had a rules discussion about if my Doctor could heal the HVTarg…. We decided she could, so Andy shot her again to be sure, and this time killed her dead, but was sent dogged by the Keisotsu on suppression and later died.

With the Console tally being 2 – 0 Andy moved his specialists into action.  He moved his Guilang Assault Hacker to the NW, his Ninja Killer Hacker to the N and his Weibing FO REM to the NE and in about 8 rolls only managed to WP 2 of the consoles!!!!!!!  His luck really left him!

He then moved up his Pheasant and the Madtraps to be in range of my Keisotsu link.

Finally he moved his Monk up to Shinobu and laid a Chain Rifle over her and the Tokusetsu Doctor.  Shinobu dodged, but the doctor bought the farm!

Round 3 JSA

I needed to get more consoles and secure the others.  First issue was the Monk pinning Shinobu down.  Saito was now the only unit in the pool and I was out of command tokens to move him, so he moved across and got a line on the Monk and managed to gun him down with his Combi.

The Keisotsu link then activated, and dodge, but the Kempetai was IMM-2 and stuck down by the MadTrap.  Now I could have free’d her with Yuriko, but orders were limited,so I went for the console and WP’d it.

I needed to deal with his specialists as I was 0-2 for specialist kills, so Shinobu went after the Ninja Killer Hacker and after two attempts managed to kill her with Combi Rifle fire.

With only a couple of orders left I moved Yuriko and her team to the centre console and WP’d it, and then set up a field of fire to keep his Weibing pinned down.

Round 3 Yu Jing

Making another WP roll, the Guilang Assault Hacker finally got the NW console.  He then moved up the Weibing slowly to keep out of LoF, then dashed for the E console.  Two Keisotsu managed to gun it down, but it got to the console, made a WP roll and…..failed!!!!!!

Running out of options, Andy decided to make a long run with his Pheasant to come all the way to my side and go for the SE console.  He had a clear run, except for a very long (-3) ARO from Shinobu.  The Pheasent failed to dodge, and Shinobu found her mark and put her down!

Still fighting for OP’s Andy sent in a mad Kuang Shi.  He ran up the ramp taking down a HMG Keisotsu with a chain rifle.  He then put down the stuck down Kempetai.  With his last order he went for Yuriko and a FO Keisotsu but both managed to dodge!

Final Score

Luck really saved me there!  I had killed 3 specialists (Ninja, Pheasent, Weibing) and so had Andy (Kempetai, and Tokusetsu Doctor and Engineer).

I had managed to get 4 consoles and Andy had got three.  Both of use had killed the HVTarg with the Data Tracker.

Final Standings

It was a really cracking last game that went to a knife edge, we both had our lucky and unlucky points but Andy failing all those WP rolls on the console really swung it to me!  But not getting the full win dropped me to a respectable 4th place with 6 TP and 23 OP, a great result.

A great tournament and some really great games and opponents!  Thanks to Keith Shutler for TOing and getting it all together in the face of adversity!  Look forward to the next one!
