War of the Worlds IV

War of the Worlds IV – Hosted by IBuyWargames, Woking, UK

So, three Rogues decided to go on a road trip!  Me – Stuart “sam2064” Marsh, Grantt “Art of War” Ennis, and Chris “MeekRebel” Hobday.  Coming down by car also allowed both Grantt and myself to bring down our tables!  It was the first ITS outing for both of our new tables so we were real excited to see them in action (Grantt’s table won best table of the day!!!!)

For me and Chris this was at least our 3rd War of the Worlds – but this time they had decided to go big! And I do mean BIG!  The I Buy Wargames shop was not small, and we could fit in nine tables of Infinity over two levels, but moving around was tough!  Someones big behind would nudge your scenery or worse send one of your troopers into oblivion – and in the change-over between rounds you had to dance with mass model death as you navigated the stairs with your tournament tray!

So with this in mind, Keith Shuttler and Ian Simpkins had booked out the local Conservative Club (It did mean we had to sedate “Red” Chris before he would go into the room).  The upstairs was huge with more than enough room, and there was a BAR!  When the event went live, it soon became apparent this was going to be THE BIGGEST ITS tournament the South East has seen in some time.  We eventually reach 28 players for the ITS and that was with a couple of last minute drop outs.  We even had 3 people playing a side event of Fat Yuan Yuan missions.

Big shout out for Keith Shuttler (War Cor) and Ian Simpkins (IBuyWargames) for running he day so smoothly!

The Missions

1 – Engineering Deck

2 – Highly classified

3 – Firefight

I had practiced Engineering Deck with Grantt (although we of course forgot about the saturation zone!).  I hadn’t played Highly Classified much, and Chris beat me up in our practice game (although we didn’t get a third turn – that’s my excuse!).  The last one, Fire Fight, is a favourite of mine, and I had played a very effective Tiger Solider list at the Games Expo.

The Tables

The Learning Curve (LC)

I like to pick a theme to add to by tournament reports – and today it’s the “Learning Curve”.  If you have played Infinity, and you’re either a new line trooper, or a grizzled Vertern Kazak then you know that the LC is steep in Infinity.  It starts by just knowing the basic rules…. Then you have to learn the special rules of your army… right now you’re ready to play.  Then you learn some tactics for your army – “ooohhhh, what if I throwsome smoke over my Intruder with MSV2!”.  BUT THEN you start to learn slowly the special rules of other armies as you encounter them on the battle field (SYMBI-WHAT!!!! That’s so broken!).  Then, the final part of becoming a true Jedi Master, is to be able to know and predict the enemies tactical choices, even with other armies, and be ready for them.  Having played infinity for about 2 years now – I feel I’m somewhere in the last two steps – I’m not a Padawan, but I certainly not a Master J.  Looking back at the tournament I’ve certainly had a lot of LC moments that I can learn from!

War of the Worlds

Game 1

  • Opponent – Laina “Laina”
  • Faction – Hassassin Bahram
  • Mission – Engineering Deck
  • List – A

This was the first time I had played Laina (although we were both at the Games Expo) and one of the few times I had played vs Hassassins or HaqqIslam in general in an ITS tournament.  I knew a few of their tricks but still the Learning Curve was going to be steep!

I lost the Initiative roll and Laina decided to take the initiative and go first – so I deployed second and chose the more elevated DZ.  I was paranoid that an Impersonating Hassassin would pop up in my DZ so I set up with my Zhanshi LT in a small room on the second floor and packed the Kuang Shi around her.  After I had set up she did look at places to set up her inevitable Impersonation token – but the web of Kuang Shi put her off and she ended up placing it being the objective room on her side of the table.

Liana’s side of the table was quite open which was in a was an advantaged to me – but at the same time a disadvantaged as there weren’t many placed to deploy Shinobu.  I held her back and ended up putting her in the half way line and not rolling for Infiltration.

Turn 1 Hassassin

I stripped two orders from the primary order pool – but she still had a lot!  The 4 Mutts went first and moved out, I did managed to catch one with my TR HMG REM and put him down.  The Muyib Fireteam went next.  They moved up carefully and the terrain helped them to get to the half way line.  A Spitfire Muyib popped out and shot at my TR HMG, but the dice were ice cold and it only scored a single hit which I saved!  He fired again and CRIT the Muyib went down!  A Muyib doctor moved up and healed him, and he went again and this time put the REM down on unconscious level 2.  Then Liana did what people should do with REM’s (especially with and Engineer near them), she shot it again and wasted it!  Running low on orders in that group she still managed to WP the nearby console with one of the link.

With her other group she moved up a specialist and WP’ed the other console on her side of the table.  She then moved up her Mutts to support, and one of them managed to moved up onto prone on a walkway as both my ARO pieces were down  Finally she used her hacker to place Assisted Fire on her Shihab TR REM.

Turn 1 Yu Jing

With the Muyib link right near Shinobu, I couldn’t resist going for it!  She moved out as a marker, moving out of LoF of the Muyib Spitfire.  She then threw an uncontested smoke grenade over the link and a supporting Mutt.  I had to take the Mutt out first because as soon as I took an action in his ZoC he’d Jammer me, so I moved up through the smoke using Stealth and murdered him.  Shinobu then went to work and took out the spitfire Muyib. She then had to throw smoke with Speculative fire to cover her advance murdered two more Muyibs!  Running out of orders I added Assisted Fire to my Rui Shi and went to take out a Muyib HRL, but first had to move my Engineers Yaozao away from the Rui Shi so it didn’t get caught in the Muyibs blast! [LC Never place your servant/Engineer next to your remote always at least 3” away/the size of a blast template].  The Rui Shi did its job though,  which left only a single Muyib!

With my other group, I decided to try and take on Laina’s TR Bot which was in the open.  I chose to use my TO Camo Ninja Assault hacker who was on the mid line, and did a surprise shot – CRIT down went my ninja!  [LC – That was a complete was of a valuable infiltrating specialist!  I should have deployed near a console and taken it!  Infiltrating specialist are the best at getting consoles as you save those orders you would have spent moving].

Plan B…. I moved the Raiden HRL up and took a surprise shot – better numbers 2 on 15’s vs 4 on 11’s….nope, wasn’t going my way… and the Raiden went down.

With my last couple of orders I moved Shinobu back through the smoke, knowing a nearby Mutt would be coming for her, and placed some units on suppression.

Turn 2 Hassassin

We both realised that we were playing a bit slow and that this round would end up being the last.  Laina moved her Mutt towards Shinobu who gunned it down (It tried to chain rifle her but was a couple of inches out).  The Mutt on the walkway stood up and continued to move up!  [LC – ARO’s.  At this point I completely missed that both of by camo markers had ARO’s vs this Mutt.  It always pays to keep track of your LoF’s!  This probably cost me the game!]  The Mutt kept moving up and the walkway lead right up to the second floor of the building.  [LC – As it moved into ZoC of my troopers I tried to Blackout its Jammer but then realised that Jammers are not Comms Equipment…..].  Laina is a savvy player and seeing the non-specialist Zhanshi surrounded by specialists (a hacker and doctor) and Kuang Shi – she had pegged it as my LT – and she was right.  It took two attempts but she was isolated by the Jammer and I was in Loss of Lieutenant!  Not stopping there the Mutt also Isolated by Hacker!

Finally, in a plucky move she ran her line trooper specialist right the way up into my half to the console on my right.  It tripped two ARO’s from my Guilang camo makers (the two I’d forgotten before), but both missed as he threw himself onto the console and flipped it.

Turn 2 Yu Jing

Loss of Lieutenant!  One command token…. My options were limited.  The score was going to be 5-0, at the moment.  Had I not lost my LT things would have been very different! [LC – Taking a lone Zhanshi as my LT was a real risk.  An experienced player will quacking peg that as the LT!]

My Kuang Shi ran out, getting isolated on their way by the Mutt but they had Exp Imp and Regular orders.  One Kuang Shi I dropped into Biolocator mode right next to my Doctor.  With their regular orders, a Kuang Shi ran out getting into CC with the Mutt shooting him with pistols as he went, trying to kill the Mutt but failed!  This did mean the other Kuang shi could move out along the catwalk and chain rifle the specialist on the console, but he passed his ARM roll.

I needed to cut out some ARO’s.  My Rui Shi took a shot and put down a trooper.  Shinobu, who amazingly had survived, shot and took out the last Muyib.  Now to get the objective room.  My Guilang FO moved up to the door, the Haqq specialist ARO’d with a rifle and hit, and my Guilang WP’ed the door and succeeded, and passed his ARM roll.  With that Guilang blocking the LoF to the other Guilang, he was able to move freely into the room.  I had the room now and that Guilang was also in ZoC of Laina’s HVT.  That was 4 points!  All I needed to do now was make a WP roll with my Doctor to bring the Biolocator Kuang Shi back from Biolocator state, needing a 13 I get a 14 – no cube…. No rerolls!

That was it! Sooooooo close!

Final Score

Laina – Partial Victory.  2 TP.  5 OP (More consoles 5 OP). 204 VP

Stuart – Loss.  0 TP. 4 OP (Objective room 3 OP, Secure HVT 1). 209 VP

Game 2

  • Opponent – Kai “Kaizer82”
  • Faction – Yu Jing
  • Mission – Highly Classified
  • List – A

It’s always interesting when you get a mirror match!  You start looking at your opponent and second guessing what he will do – because you know the army so well!  Kai hadn’t been playing Yu Jing for long though.  We drew the shared classifieds and got:

  • Test Run
  • HVT: Designation
  • Demolition
  • Extreme Prejudice

I drew Data Scan for my personal classified.  This list was very suited to HC and I had practiced to go for the objectives very quickly.  I won the initiative roll and choose to go first and deployed first.  Kai puts his army down.  I spot a loan Tokusetsui doctor off to one side behind a barricade and pick that as my target for Shinobu placing her a couple of inches away prone.  He then places a Hsein HMG (obvious LT material!) right next to Shinobu between the her and the doctor!!!! A gift set up!

Turn 1 Yu Jing

Kai decides to take 2 orders from my second pool, which isn’t a bad idea as my doctor and Engineer were in that pool.  I straight away bring Shinobu out and she goes for the Hsein – but he’s no push over!  He has MA2 and a CC of 19, but with CC 25, monofilament weapon and surprise attack Shinobu kills him in one hit.  She then moves onto the doctor but uses a “Bare-Handed” attack.  It takes 3 hits (none of them crits, even though she needed only a 12) but finally the tough doctor went down to unconscious – which allowed Shinobu to Coup de Grace for Extreme Prejudice!

Next I move up the TR HMG and use it to gun down a Monk.  The TR Bot not has a clear LoF down half the table.

The Raiden then takes a long range shot at an Tokusetsu Engineer who has his back to him, the blast also catches another Monk and incinerates them both! [LC – The monk threw smoke as an ARO but because the Engineer was the target, the smoke grenade couldn’t defend vs the attack].

This leaves my Guilang FO to move freely.  He moves as a Camo Marker, while Ki’s camo marker delays (which is obviously a Raiden HRL with another camo marker/mine nearby).  This allows the Guilang to hop a wall and HVT: Designate Ki’s HVT.

Turn 1 Evil Yu Jing

Kai had lost his only Doctor and Engineer so this really put him at a disadvantage.  He wasn’t in LoL (as there was an obvious Chain of Command Pheasant Rank in his back lines). His Aragoto Spitfire used its impetuous order to move out in front of my Raiden HRL but lost the F2F and went down.  His Monk ran towards Shinobu and threw smoke.  This allowed his Rui Shi to hunt down Shinobu and gun her down!  He placed his Rui Shi in suppression.

Turn 2 Yu Jing

I started by activating my Ninja Assault Hacker who moved up towards the Rui Shi into ZoC as a marker.  I then used Carbonite to attack his Hacker through the Rui Shi’s repeater, bu SURPISE, a Ninja Killer Hacker appears literally behind him and blows his bran out with Skull Buster!  I decide to use my Guilang to go after the Ninja.  He surprise shots the Ninja who dodges around a corner.  The Guilang then moves up to the corner and pushes a mine around the corner getting into LoF of the Ninja!  He then moved around and shoots, the Ninja tries to Engage fails and gets 3 combi rounds and a mine to the face!

The Rui Shi is still supressing so I send my Rui Shi against it – 4 rounds of fire, my Rui Shit finally puts his down! (I was hoping mine would go down as I had an Engineer nearby for test run).  Now his Rui Shi was down so I moved up my Hacker and did my Data Scan!

Turn 2 Evil Yu Jing

Ki had a few orders left and I’m wondering if he is in Retreat….  But he reveals an Oniwaniban and takes down my TR HMG with his Shotgun but gets hit a burned to death by the Raiden HRL.  He moved his Panguilang repeater REM near to the HVT and the tried to use spotlight to get HVT Designation but failed.

Turn 3 Yu Jing

Moving my Engineer into my primary combat group I’m able to move up complete the Demolition classified and move my Yaozao up to my downed TR HMG and complete Test Run.  After that my Raiden kills the Panguilang and then the Rui Shi kills the Raiden and the Hacker, leaving only the Pheasant Rank.

Turn 3 Evil Yu Jing

The Pheasant ranks goes into retreat and the games ends.

Final Score

Stuart – Complete Victory 3 TP. 10 OP (More classifieds 4 OP, 4 Main Classifieds 4 OP, Secondary Classified 2 VP).  196 VP

Kai – Loss.  0 TP.  0 OP. 26 VP

Game 3

  • Opponent – James “Murkage”
  • Faction – Ariadna
  • Mission – Fire Fight
  • List – B

Going into the final round I was really hoping to win initiative on this one but failed and James took turn order.  He then deployed about 8 units and 12 camo tokens!!! Well this was going to be fun!!!!

Turn 1 Ariadna

I took 2 orders off James’s largest pool (which was tricky to see as he had so few open information orders).  James started off by bringing up a Camo marker/Chassuer who surprise shot my Celestial Guard.  He then recamo’d and moved up to my Rui Shi and took it on but the Rui Shi had Over Clock and managed to get a CRIT!

He then moved up a Vetern Kazak HMG and took down my TR HMG and then shot it again to put it down.  He moved a Fox Trot into the centre room and grabbed an early Panoply getting a Breaker Rifle then laid a couple of mines!  Finally he recamo’d everything.

Turn 1 Yu Jing

Down a couple of orders it was time to hit back!  My Kuang Shi ran out and pistoled an Infiltrating Grunt putting him down next to the Chasseur.

I then walked on the Spitfire Tiger – who went to work.  He killed Uxia McNeil who was still on the back line after failing to Infiltrate.  He then killed an Engineer and then a line Kazak, and forced a Catern Sniper back (who passed his ARM), before settling into suppression.

I only had 2 orders in the other pool, so I took a risk and bought on my Boarding shotgun tiger on the left table edge out of LoF of anything behind a building. He moved up forcing an ARO from a camo token in LoF, a Camo token and Volunteer in ZoC on a balcony above.  The Camo marker idled, so the Tiger went up the ladder to the balcony.  Then came the roll of the game….I tried to discover/shoot putting both shots onto the camo marker hoping to catch the Volunteer behind, but I failed the discover, the shot couldn’t go off and the Volunteer Chain Rifled the Tiger to death.  Turns out that Camo marker was his LT!!!!!!!! [LC – If I had bought on my other Tiger with Combi and Flame Thrower I could have targeted the Volunteer and got the camo marker by default!!!!!!!]

Turn 2 Ariadna

So James is a pro at using camo!  He moves the re-camo’d Vertern Kazak up to my Tiger – I now have a choice to delay or discover.  I delay and he just moves around behind me!  He takes one shot at me with the HMG and puts the Tiger down!

He then moves up a Hardcase/Camo and tried to discover my Camo’d Raiden but fails and I hold my nerve and don’t ARO, so he stays Camo’d.  With all the moving around – he’s almost out of orders and very annoyingly he recamo’s the Veteran Kazak!  As a final insult he does a Coup de grace on my Tiger with shotgun and gets one of his classifieds.

Turn 2 Yu Jing

I move my last Tiger to the 1st combat group with a command token and drop him in, near the Vetern Kazak.  I move up to see him, he does nothing and I move close into 8”.  I activate, he does nothing, I discover and fail!  I can’t discover any more but I have one last option.  I do an entire order Intuitive Attack with his Flamethrower, my 13’s vs the Kazak’s pistol on 12’s and the Kazak won and put the Tiger down!

I then decide to pull out my last option – a Hac Tao Killer Hacker.  He comes out of TO right next to the unconscious Chasseur and Coup De Grace for 1 classified.  He then moves and does a data scan on the unconscious Grunt and gets it.

The Hac Tao then moves to take on the Catern Sniper – who once again makes his saves and falls back. So with his last order he settles into suppression.

Turn 3 Ariadna

James starts by moving his Vetarn Kazak – yeah that guy just won’t die! – making sure he is out of 24” from my Hac Tao and lights him up with the HMG, but the Hac Tao dodges and drops prone into cover.  James the moves out his Fox Trot who has recamo’d and does the same camo trick again!  He moves up to the Hac Tao, who then delays, and he moves past him.  He then takes the shot at the Hac Tao who does Change Face and fails, but my Raiden gets an ARO as well.  The Hac Tao fails all his saves…… and gets killed…. And the Raiden misses!

He then brings up his Hard Case/Camo and surprise shots the Raiden putting him down.  The Fox Trot then moves up to a position to secure my HVT who is right near James’s HVT.

As a final order he walks on Van Zant in his own half to avoid losing points for not using him.

Turn 3 Yu Jing

With my Hac Tao going down I know that has really swung things against me!  My Kuang Shi run out and get gunned down by the Catern Sniper (who just refused to die).  This time my Rui Shi goes after him and guns him down.  My last surviving Kuang Shi makes a run at a Panoply and gets it earning a HMG.  He then goes for the Fox Trot, using his pistol, but CRIT, CRIT both troopers CRIT!  The games ended there but I did stop James Securing HVT!

Final Result

James – Partial Victory. 2 TP. 5 OP (1 Classified, More Army Points). 234 VP (with 2 baggage!)

Stuart – Loss. 0 TO. 3 OP (2 Classifies, Killed more Specialists). 100 VP.

Final Standings

What a day! So much drama!  Lots of mistakes to learn from, and two very close losses! I finished 15/28 in the end which wasn’t to bad considering the calibre of players at the tournament.

The Rogues did well with Chris getting 6th and Grantt taking 18th.

This was an absolutely great day with so many games clubs turning out in force at the tournament.  The Totally Crit Crew, Infinity HATE, the I Buy Wargamers and more groups!  Looking forward to the next one!
