Games Expo 2017

For the first time I decided to head up to the Games Expo at the Birmingham NEC for couple of days.  I spent the first day with Stuart “Pollitt” Pollitt (trying not to spend too much money in the trade hall) and then met up with Ian Wood for an epic warmup game – where my WarCor became a hero against the forces for the Combined Army!

On Saturday, we me up with Chris “MeekRebel” Hobday ready for the Games Expo Infinity tournament. 22 players lined up for the contest!  We did have an odd number and one person didn’t turn up but Ian Wood stood down to help run the tournament!  We had quite a line-up of players with some new players and some veterans that I recognised from the UK Masters in 2016!

Peter Acs had picked a great lineup of missions.  Antenna Field, Supplies and Firefight.  Those three mission had very different issues!  Antenna Field and Supplies need specialists, where in Firefight the aren’t necessary.  In Supplies you want Infiltrating specialists to get the crates, but in Antenna Field there is an 8” exclusion zone so Infiltrators are next to useless!  List building proved to be a real challenge…

Game 1

  • Mission: Antenna Field
  • Opponent: Stuart “Pollitt” Pollitt
  • Faction: NeoTerra
  • List: A

Stuart P was a regular at our local games club the Kentish Rogues and cut his teeth playing me and Chris H.  We both had an idea of what was in each other’s armies as we had discussed our lists before the tournament – so this was going to be an interesting game.

I won initiative and chose to deploy second – and Stuart went for the gambit of taking 2nd turn which gives a real advantage in this scenario.

Stuart set up a 5 man team of Fusiliers, with a missile launcher covering the central axis of the board and three of the Antenna.  He also had a TR HMG covering, and a Bulletter ready to move in, but everything else was is hidden deployment.

Turn 1 Yu Jing

My primary concern was to deal with the Fusilier ML and team – so I took the gambit and dropped my Tiger w/spitfire in behind the Bulleteer and right around the corner from the link ready to flame them up.  The Tiger made the roll (with the EVO bonus) and was then struck down straight away by a HD Swiss Guard Missile Launcher right next to the Bulleteer!  OK time for plan B.  So I drop the other Tiger Paramedic nearby, behind cover and out of ZoC.  The Tiger moved up into cover and flames the Bulleteer, cooking it, and the Swiss Guard, giving him 1 wound and burning his TO Camo down to mimitism.  They exchanged fire against and this time the Swiss Guard went down.

Next I move up with the Hac Tao using the scenery as cover and get right up to within 16” of the TR Bot.  The Hac Tao takes a surprise shot of the TR REM but it takes two attempts to put it down.  Running short on orders he takes a shot at the Fusilier ML who tanks his armour saves and ducks back into full cover.  I now have the choice of moving the Hac Tao back and onto the antenna or going into suppression – but I can’t do both, so I decide to go on suppression.

Turn 1 Neo Terra

Stuart starts by revealing a Hexas TO killer hacker and taking a surprise shot at the Hac Tao, but they miss each other (shooting on 2’s and 3’s!).  On the second exchange of fire the Hac Tao’s better BS gives me the edge and he puts down the Hexas.

The Fusilier ML pops out enough to see my Raiden HRL in Camo who ARO’s but is blasted.  Then he takes on the TR HMG and drops him onto unconscious level 2 and killing my doctor in the blast, and then moves back into cover.

He then reveals a second Hexas and manages to move him as a marker out of the Hac Tao’s suppression field into cover, but he does get spotted by the War Cor.  He then manages to move prove using the cover to get into contact with one of the antenna.  The WarCor flash pulses him but it doesn’t matter for this scenario as you just need to be in base contact.

First round’s scoring goes to NeoTerra for 2 points.

Turn 2 Yu Jing

The Rui Shi loads up support ware and makes short work of the Hexas.  The Tiger Paramedic moves up the right side and tries to revive the other Tiger… but predictably kills him stone dead on a 20!  The Tiger then moves around the corner and lays a flame thrower down roasting two of the Fusiliers in the link but is put down by combi rifle fire.  The Fusilier ML tanks his ARM saves and is still in the game.

Determined to score this turn I move the Hac Tao onto the centre antenna and back him up with the Rui Shi on suppression.  I then move up my Engineer, putting the TR REM back up and then move the Tokusetsu into contact with the antenna closest to my DZ.

Turn 3 Neo Terra

Stuart reforms the link as a three man team, and moves the missile launcher out to take on the Rui Shi.  He targets the Rui Shi and lands one hit, but the Rui Shi beats him in the face to face, but he makes the ARM save.  The Hac Tao is caught in the blast and takes a wound.  He repeats this but this time the Rui Shi puts him down and the Hac Tao manages to dodge into cover.

Then the second Swiss Guard, this one an Assualt Hacker, pops out of HD.  He exchanges fire with the Rui Shi but takes a hit while moving up into cover.

Turn 3 Yu Jing

I load up the Rui Shi with Assisted Fire again and take down the Swiss Guard.  The Hac Tao then moves if for the kill, taking out another Fusilier (after 3 attempts!) and then moves to the antenna on NeoTerra’s DZ.  The Tokusetsu moves up to replace the Hac Tao on the centre antenna

Turn 3 Neo Terra

With only his last remaining Fusilier which is his Lt, Stuart throws him towards the HVT hoping to nullify my Secure HVT, but he gets gunned down by the Rui Shi.

Game 2

  • Mission: Supplies
  • Opponent: Phil
  • Faction: Shock Army of Ancontecimento
  • List: B

For this mission I had designed a separate list to really fight to contest the crates.  I lost the initiative roll and Phil decided to go first.  He deployed a lot of orders, including a 5 man link of Ancontecimento Regulars including a Sapper Sniper plus a spare guy, a Knight of Montessa with Spitfire and a few REM’s including a Mechanised deployment Peacemaker with Heavy Shotgun and Aux Bot right on the half way line, along with a Bulleteer with Spitfire, plus a couple of camo tokens.

I set up my skirmish line of 5 camo tokens (2 Guilags each with a mine, and a DaoFei Assault hacker, plus a TO Hidden Ninja Killer hacker and a Kanren with Sniffer.

Turn 1 SAOA

I had carefully set up my troops so the sniper couple get no LoF on any of them.  So in a bold move he took the Knight of Montessa and moved him up, discovering a mine and blasting it.  Now with the coast clear he moved up his Camo token, who moved into contact with the supply crate but as he did so I revealed one of my Guilang and discovered her as a Naga Killer Hacker.  She was now stuck in the open with a TR HMG and my Guilang in LoF so he bought out his Bulleteer spitfire which spent a couple of turns taking down my TR HMG and then moved to attack my Guilang, who instead of shooting back, placed a mine but was then cut down.  I thought I had placed the mine to catch the Naga, but when he activated it to move her back from the crate it came up ¼ inch short!!!!! My other Guilang revealed and took a shot at her, so she couldn’t use her second short skill to get the crate and fired back, but both missed.  He then moved the Bulleteer to take on the second Guilang, who lays a mine at his feet but gets cut down, and the Ninja killer hacker drops out of HD and successfully engages the Bulleteer.  This was a big mistake on my part as now the Naga Killer Hacker uses Trinity on her and all she can do is reset and fail and have her brain fried.  After all of that exchange he has just enough orders to go back to the crate, pop it, take the supplies and run back into cover.

He placed his Knight of Montessa on Suppression Fire to cover the central axis.

Turn 1 Yu Jing

I had lost my two Guilangs and Ninja and really needed to push back to get the other crates.  My Weibing Sensor remote pinged with Sensor and flushed out the other Naga out of Camo using the Kanren’s Sniffer.

I then used my Celestial Guard to pop smoke into the LoF of the Sapper Sniper and then moved my Assisted Fire Rui Shi out..  It took on the Bulleteer, which ARO’d back and set off the mine, going down onto 2 levels of unconscious.  The RuiShi moved on and engaged the Pathfinder HSG, but it managed to make survive two round of fire!  Only on the third burst did it go down.

I then made a mistake! I moved out my Sensor REM out to take on the Knight which was in suppression fire, thinking I was over 24” but I was in 23”.  It hit with the first exchange of fire causing a wound, but then went down on the second exchange!

My next mistake was with the Kanren – which I had forgot to place the Holo-Echo’s down. He moved up to take on the other Naga Killer hacker who was close to the left side crate, but got beaten in the face to face… but if I had done the surprise shot from marker state he would have succeeded!

I finished my turn by moving the RuiShi and Camo’d DaoFei up to the rightside crate and supressing with the Rui Shi.

Only at the end of the turn did I realise I had forgot to use my Tokusetsu Engineer right next to my TR HMG to fix it!!!!

Turn 2 SAOA

So this is where it all went downhill!  He started by using his other Naga to get the left side crate and run off back to join his 1st Naga (how as this point I wished I had a Tiger who could have dropped in and roast both of them!!!).  He then activated his Machinist and PAL bot which moved up and fixed the Bulleteer HSG.  It then activated and exchanged fire with the Rui Shi, but also now could use is AuxBot which then plaid a flame template over the Rui Shi and my Camo DaoFei.  When the smoke cleared, the Bulleteer was down, my Rui Shi was burning but my DaoFei had managed to dodge.  He activated the Machinists/PAL bot again and I tried to hack the PAL bot with my DaoFei but he was at 8 and ¼”!!!!!!  So up comes the Bulleteer again into LoF with my DaoFei, along with the AuxBot and this time I decide to shot up the Bulleteer taking it down, and manage to tank the flamer template from the AuxBot.

Turn 2 Yu Jing

I was now 2 crates to none and down to 8 orders!  So the DaoFei decided to take on the world!  He grabs the crate, then under the cover of smoke from the Celestial Guard, runs through the Sapper Snipers LoF.  He then moves around and takes on the supressing Knight of Montessa in a close range gun fight and puts him down.  He then moves up towards the pair of thieving Naga’s but first has to get past a Regular with Combi Rifle who is part of the link.  They exchange fire, CRIT, the DaoFei takes a wound.  He is a tough SOB with 2W so he carries on, CRIT he goes down……  With nothing to lose I throw out my Zhanshi Lt and Hacker to take shots, destroying the downed Bulleteer.

Turn 3 SAOA

It’s really just clearing up now.  He moves up his 5 man link (leaving the sniper being on cover) and pick up the crate and takes down the Celestial Guard.  Then takes out my Zhanshi Lt and hacker.

Turn 3 Yu Jing

In a final act of defiance my Kuang Shi run out and get gunned down, and the Tokusetsu Engineer goes out screaming as he tries to shoot the link team.

Game 3

  • Mission: Fire Fight
  • Opponent: David
  • Faction: Military Orders
  • List: A

This was the mission I was most looking forward to.  With my two Tigers and an Evo hacker I was landing on 18’s.  David won the initiative and decided to set up second and choose deployment, so I chose to go first.

David set a 5 man link team of Order Sergeants with a HRL and Sniper on the roof.  He had Joan of Arc (armoured version) and then held back a Seraph!

Turn 1 Yu Jing

It’s all about finding an opening and the Tiger Paramedic did.  First I had to clear the way.  The Raiden HRL surprised shot the Seraph and landed a hit, doing 1 wound.  The Seraph missed but the flame template caught its AuxBot which was covering its rear and burnt it to a crisp.  The Tiger then walked on the right table side, right next to the Seraph (but behind a building) and  into LoF of Joan who has her back to him.  Joan made her change of face roll and spun around.  We then had an epic firefight between the Tiger and Joan which after 5 orders of shooting left Joan dead on the floor!

I then dropped in the second Tiger with Spitfire.  He started by murdering a poor defenceless Techbee, shooting her in the back. He then moved around a corner and gunned down a Black Friar again in the back.  Finally he went after the Sniper on the roof, CRIT, down went the Tiger.

The Raiden tried to shoot the Seraph again but this time was beaten and gunned down.   With my last orders I went on suppression with some units.

Turn 1 MO

In loss of Lt David wasn’t able to make much headway.  The Seraph stepped around the corner and gunned down the Tiger Paramedic.  He moved up some units but didn’t engage in any more shooting, then placed his Seraph on suppression.

Turn 2 Yu Jing

The Rui Shi with assisted fire moved into action.  Moving up the table it engaged then Seraph at long rage forcing it to drop out of suppression, and landed a hit but it made its ARM roll.  The Rui Shi then moved on, out of the Seraph’s LoF, and engaged first a combi Order Sargent and then the Sniper managing to take them both down.  The Hac Tao moved up and went into suppression.  The Tokusetsu Engineer activated its Yaoxie and went for the panoply and got a Breaker Rifle!  It then decided to take a long range shot at the Seraph, but both missed!

Turn 2 MO

With a new Lt and back to regular orders, the Seraph went on the offensive and super jumped up onto a roof to see the supressing Hac Tao but the Hac Tao cut down the Seraph with AP fire form his Multi Rifle.  This left David with few options.

Turn 3 Yu Jing

The Rui Shi moved in and killed the Order Sargent HRL then moved up to take on one of the Order Sargent behind the building.  The Hac Tao moved out and gunned down Bit and Kiss.  Then the Yaozao with its break rifle went of a killing spree, taking down an enemy PAL bot and the last Order Sargent.  I secured the HVT but couldn’t do my other classifies as both needed FO’s or Hackers with Spotlight!

Turn 3 MO

The last MO trooper was in retreat (but ignored it due to Religious).

Final Standings

That was a great tournament with some very tense games.  I certainly suffered from war fatigue especially in game 2 forgetting a few vital things!  In all my games I forgot to add 20 VP for baggage from my EVO Hacker!  I finished in 8th place in a bracket with lots of people on 6 TP and 17 OP which included my fellow rogue Chris “Meek Rebel” Hobday who picked up 6th place after winning his first two games but losing out to Ariadna in the last round!  Stuart “Pollitt” Pollitt lost his first two games, but then won his last game to finish in 13th.  A good showing by team Rogue!!!  Thanks to Ian Wood and Peter Acs for running a great tournament!
