Biotechvore Showdown@Hydra

“Priority message to Yu Jing High Command.  This is Imperial Agent Chi Yai, Pheasant Rank – Imperial State Service – Shence Combat Group.  Mission had been compromised, I repeat mission has been compromised.  Request immediate EVAC.  On route to recover assets, we have come under attack by Biotechvore Nanites!    We immediately started to evac the area but have come under fire from a small PanO Military Order force.  We are engaging the enemy.   I am assuming command of the combat group.  Repeat request immediate EVAC.”

So time for another Showdown 1 round ITS tournament at the Hydra Games Club in High Brooms, near Tonbridge, Kent.  I and fellow Kentish Rogue Chris “MeekRebel” Hobday headed down – and some diabolical sadist (Rob “Bobman” Neil) had selected Biotechvore as the mission.  You know how people say you should never take a new list to ITS – well I went one worse and decided today would be a good time to try out Imperial State Service for the first time.  This was going to tough, not everyone would survive… game on!

Mission Briefing – Biotechvore

Of all the missions in ITS, none installs such fear as Biotechvore!  When you turn up at your FLGS and say “I know what will be fun, let’s play Biotechvore” you will be greeted by a swift boot.  This is the first time I had ever played the mission – and when I was building lists I thought about the different ways to deal with this unique mission.

So what’s special about Biotechvore?  First of all, the DZ is only 8” and not the normal 12”.  Then there is the Biotechvore its self, cloud of nanites which hunts down all biological and technological energy sources and devours them.  The cloud spans a distance of 16” from each table edge, the 8” DZ and another 8”!  At the end of each players turn, that players forces are attacked by the cloud with a BTS attack of 13.  The little pesky nanites particularly like REM’s and TAG’s, and any troop profile with STR and not Wounds must make 2 BTS 13 saves.

If all this wasn’t enough, any skills that would allow you to start out of your DZ (Infiltration, Forward Deployment, Impersonation, AD) all require a roll at PH-3!  So any of these units become a gamble – if you fail though, you can deploy to anywhere in your DZ and not just at your table edge.

  • Score more classifieds that the opponent (1 Point)
  • Kill more Army Points (3 Points)
  • Have 75-150 Army Points surviving (2 Point)
  • Have 151-250 Army Points surviving (3 Points)
  • Have 251+ Army Points surviving (4 Points)
  • 2 Classified Objectives (1 point each)

So the big issue is getting out of the cloud.  Since most troopers have a MOV value of 4”-4” with one regular order they will not be able to get out of the cloud!  So if you have 10 troopers in a combat group and each spends an order to move up, none of them will be able to escape the cloud.  There is the ability to use co-ordinated orders though, but that will depend is you go first or second.

If you decide to take turn order and go first you opponent will either remove two orders or potentially worse limit you to spending one command token/one co-ordinated order.  The advantage of going first however is you can set up ARO’s to try an pin the enemy in their cloud and not escape.

If you decide to go second you can play a strong ARO game and try and slow your opponent down as they try to escape the cloud, but with only an 8”DZ this may prove difficult.  When it gets to your turn though. You’ll be able to use your full order pool and co-ordinated orders to escape the zone.

I can up with three ideas to deal with Biotechvore.

Go Impetuous!

Taking lots of units with Impetuous or Extreme Impetuous will help you to escape the zone.  The Yu Jing unit’s that spring to mind are Aragoto (who also have 8-6 MOV) and Shaolin Monks.  This gives you more regular orders then to spend on the other units.

Take it on the chin!

If you can’t get out of the cloud, the next best thing is to survive it.  Take lots of high BTS units – HI, TAGs, REMS all with BTS of 6+.  Some factions even have some light infantry with BTS of 6 (like the Bao).

Switching Teams

The option I chose was to take a list with multiple Fire Team’s.  Take a Core and maybe a Haris and/or Duo.  You can also take a second potential Fireteam: Core and switch the active link with a command token.  So I decided that with it’s excellent fire team options I’d give ISS a go!

  • Mission: Biotechvore
  • Opponent: Rob Thomas
  • Faction: Military Orders
  • List: B

This time out I faced Rob of the clan Thomas!  He was also playing a relatively new list and faction with Military Orders.  This is a faction I’ve only played a couple of times before.  He won the initiative roll and decided to deploy second.  So I decided to take the first turn.  I deployed with the Kuang Shi/Celestial Guard as a Fireteam: Core and the Hsein/Zhanying Fireteam: Haris on the left and the Pheasant/Bao potential fireteam on the right.  Rob set up the majoring of his force on my left side an order sargent link on the right. He tried to infiltrate Brother Konstantinous but failed the PH-3 roll.  My hold back was Miranda Ashcroft/Switch but Rob being a vertern level 2 player “smelled a Switch” in his words.  His holdback was an Order Sargent HRL which set up with a LoF straight on my KS/CG team.

Turn 1 ISS

Rob decided to restrict me to 1 command token – but that didn’t bother me too much!  I started by moving up the Hsein/Zhanying Haris and threw a Nimbus grenade into the LoF of the HRL Order Sargent.  In the next order my Hsein moved up in cover and took out the Order Sargent with a Burst 4 HMG.  The Nimbus grenade tactic worked well by removing 1 from his burst reducing it to 1 and -3 to both our BS.

Next the CG/KS team moved up and put down smoke to cover the Hsein.  The Hsein then moved up and managed to get a very thin LoF on Joan of Arc!  Joan dodged and took only 1 wound, then fell back behind cover.  I moved the CG/KS link up out of the cloud and the Hsein into a good ARO position.

Spending a command token, I switched the link to the Pheasant/Bao and moved them up the right flank.  I managed to draw LoF an Order Sargent Combi and took him down with the Bao MSV Sniper.  The Sniper then took on a second Order Sargent Combi catching him out of cover, but he rolled CRIT and then I rolled one too!

We measure the cloud and it caught one of my Kuang Shi by a few mm and he got eaten by the nantites

Turn 1 Military Orders

My Hsein and Pheasant Sniper had set up very effective ARO lines across the table but I had missed something!  One of my Zhanying had its base just handing out of cover and Rob exploited this by moving up his Crusader Brethern HMG and taking him out.  This took the Haris down to two members.  He next moved into LoF of the Hsein who fluffed his rolls and took a HMG hit, and went prone.  He next decided to move up the Order Sargent link of 4 and take on my Bao Sniper.  I was in idea range and hitting on 18’s and I rolled 19 and 20!  So down when the Bao.  He moved up Konstantinous and got a shot on the Hsein who went down.  He spent his last orders moving out of the zone – but he still ended up having to  save for 5 troopers, 4 Order Sargents and Konstantinous, and Konstantinous failed his save and was eaten by the cloud.

Turn 2 ISS

My LT was down, but my Pheasent was Chain of Command.  I started out by switching the link to the CG/KG to stop them being impetuous.  The CG dropped a couple of smoke granades out to block the LoF of Joan and the Bretern.  The CG moved out and took on an Equaetrian Knight with two holo echos.  The Knight ARO’d revealing the real target and the CG score a couple of hits.  He has 7 ARM as he was in cover but rolled double 1 and went down!  Next I moved the CG/KS link right up into the smoke so that 3 remaining Kuang Shi covered both Joan and the Brethern.

I switched the link back to the Pheasant/Bao and managed to hunt down another of the order sergeants and placed my two Mad Trap right on top of his surviving sergeants.

I switched the link back to the KG/CG so they would get double chain rifles.  My Pheasant used her LT order to go on suppression.  Finally Miranda moved up and got into hacking range of Robs Father Knight assault hacker and hit him with Red Rum but he managed to save.

Turn 2 Military Orders

Rob was down to 4 orders and his LT.  He decided to Rambo with Joan and oved her up, she then received 6 Chain Rifles, 2 Combi shots and an E/Mitter from Switch.  In return she placed a Nanopulsar over 3 Kuang Shi the Celestial guard and Switch.  When the smoke cleared, Joan has been shredded (and Immobilised) but all three Kuang Shi were dogged and Switch has gone down.  Next he activated one order sargent and tried to dodge buy failed and got stuck down by a Mad Trap.  He tried to bring another order sergeant around but a Bao took him down with a Boarding Shotgun.  He then switched to the Brethern who tried to escape the Kuang Shi but got cut down by chain rifles.  Finally, he moved his last troop the Father knight into a building.

Turn 3 ISS

The three Kuang Shi died after being dogged so I had only 1 order in combat group 1 left, the Celestial Guard, who did a jump to get onto the roof of the building the Father knight was in and also get into 8” of his HVT.  My Pheasant/Bao were on the other side of the table so I spend 4 orders plus the LT order to get my Pheasant all the way over and place her in suppression facing the door to the building the Father Knight was in.

Turn 3 Military Orders

In a last act of defiance, the Father Knight stepped out and faced the suppression fire of my Pheasant, and got a CRIT putting her down.

Final Score

Stuart Complete Victory (3 TP, 7 OP, 111VP)

Rob Loss (0 TP, 0 OP, 50 VP)

Final Standings

Chris “MeekRebel” Hobday, took 1st place with a 9-0 win vs Rob “Bobman” Neil, just picking John Benford to second place with 8 OP!  Despite it being a complete kill fest of a mission I actually enjoyed the dynamic of Biotechvore.  It really shakes up the game and the tactics you need.  My ISS did really well and were only held back by some really bad dice at times!  Great tournament.  Look forward to the next.
