Totally Crit X-treme

Totally Crit X-treme!

So the 10th Totally Crit, and it didn’t disappoint!  Stuart “sam2064” Marsh, Chris “MeekRebel” Hobday and Stuart “Pollitt” Pollitt (he’s a PanO player hence the lack of imagination for his call sign 🙂 ), headed down to High Brooms (Near Tonbridge, Kent) as TEAM ROGUE!

We had a great selection of 11 mostly fully painted tables.  As the premiere event of the South-East of England, the competition was tough.  20 players, most of them dogged with Veteran level 2!  The mission line of for this tournament was split two ways between the specialist heavy Cold Sleep and the Tic Tac Toe, and the more frontal assault Capture and Protect!

Thanks to all the people who provided tables and once again thanks to the CritHeads who continue their 4 way TO duties!

Game 1

  • Opponent: Doug “DuffTrib” Idle
  • Faction: Tohaa
  • Mission: Cold Sleep
  • List: A

I haven’t had a great deal of experience playing Tohaa and most of that has been in games vs Dan Barber!  This was going to be a tough slog!

I won the initiative roll and opted to go first and Doug deployed second.  For this mission I had decided to concentrate the majority of my models on the right flank – concentrating on the tech coffins and consoles in that half.  On the other side I deployed my TR HMG to cover the left side objectives.  I chose intentionally not to place my TR HMG up high as I know that Doug would put a sniper up there, so opted to keep at ground level.  When Doug sets up he places his Nikoul Sniper dug in on a roof top!  Good call!

Turn 1 Yu Jing

Looking at the table Dug had left an easy avenue for my Tiger Spitfire to walk in on the right flank right up on his DZ so I obliged and walked on.  The Tiger advanced up to a corned and takes three shots into the back of Kumotail Doctor… two hit… and he saves both… and drops around the corner out of LoF… not a good start!  I advance up to the next contact which is going to be the Nikoul Sniper on the roof.  He’s at flat range with cover and mimitism, I’m in +3 with cover and mimitism (Cancelled by his MSV1).  The rolls look good 4 dice on 10’s vs 1 dice on 9’s.  I get the first hits.  He saves.  I go again… and completely fluff the roll and take a hit back! Down he goes!  Time for plan B… so what is that then…

I drop Assisted Fire on the Rui Shi and move up through smoke.  I’m looking at good rolls on 15’s and I hit again but the  Nikoul saves on AR again!!! 1 order left with the primary combat group I co-ordinated to put some units on suppression including the Rui Shi.

I shift around my secondary combat group and moved up the Kanren to take a surpise shot at his Rasail with Nano-Screen, and then falls back into cover, but again he tanks the arm roll!

Turn 1 Tohaa

The Nikoul starts of and takes a shot at the supressing Rui Shi and puts it down!  The Rasail moves up with his Chaksa and tking a few orders he flames my Kanren who in return puts him down with a Shot Gun to the face!  He then moves up his triads.  He moves up three units following up his Rasail and grabs a console on my leftside.  He then advances up and tries to go up against my Flash Pulse Sensor Combi Rifle REM.  This little guy is worth his weight in gold.  He shrugs of several bursts of viral ammo from his Ectros and only goes down on the last hit.  The whole exchange has burned through his order pool though!

Turn 2 Yu Jing

Time to drop the second hammer!  I move a unit from CG2 into CG1 to replace the lost Tiger and a Tiger Assault hacker walks in on the left side and straight away draws a LoF to the rear of one the Ectros’s link – down he goes.  He moves on and cuts down the next Tohaa (now without the B2 from the Triad) he goes down.  He moves on and drops the Ectros and finnaly takes on the Rasail who takes the hit on the back and makes the ARM, and uses warning to spin around.  So I reveal my Ninja Killer Hacker who shots him from just under 16” with a Tac Bow and puts it straight through the back of his head!  This Tiger is on a roll!  So I move him up the left flank and try once again to take out the Sniper – only this time from out of arc!  I get a hit but again he saves. Lucky for me I had dropped the Tiger back out of LoF for the next turn.

I fire up my TR HMG and take a long shot across the whole table at +32” and manage to put down his Makuul breaking one of his other links.  I next move up my Tokusetsu Engineer on the right site bringing his Yaozao’s with him and grab the closest console.

Turn 2 Tohaa

Doug is down to 7 orders with a 5/2 split.  Unfortunatley nothing has “died” so he cant move any units across from his second group!  He starts by moving up his Kumotail (who I’d failed to kill in turn 1) and doctors the Makuul.  He then stands up his Kerltar (from combat group 2) on a roof and tries to shoot my Tiger, but gets hit, makes his save and drops down again.  He reforms his link with the Makuul and a Sukeul HMG.  He throws Eclipse smoke over the objective (beating the TR HMG’s ARO) and moves up using the Kumotail to grab the objective.  He now has two!  He then moves his Sukeul up and out of the smoke taking on the TR HMG face to face and puts down the TR HMG!

Turn 3 Yu Jing

I now have an uphill battle!  My Tiger is still going strong though!  He back up and grabs the closest console back from the Tohaa, then sets up in suppression.  It’s now 2 consoles to 1.  I then try to take on the Triad on the other objective… I spot an opening, one of his troops has his facing in a way where by unused celestial guard can take a shot at his back and break the link.  He moves up, takes a burst of 3 – misses all… I move into 16” take a burst of 3 – misses all AGAIN!  I move up again and take the shot and this time land a CRIT and put him down.  I now need to take on the Sukeul, so I move up my Camo’d Guilang, who has been camped out in the mid field for the whole game.  He puts a surprise shot down on the Sukual and he throw his SymbioMate.  He shoots again and the tanks the ARM again.  Out of orders, I go to turn my WarCors order into a regular order to repair the RuiShi, then realise I’ve used up my last command token….

Turn 3 Tohaa

I have to weather 7 orders!  The Kaeltar stands up on the roof again and the Tiger puts him down on suppression (apparently that was his CoC/LT after the Rasail died).  His last unit in that group (The Nakuul) has no targets.

He then has 5 orders.  He uses 3 to move his unused Gao-Rael Triad towards the left side consol.  On the fourth order the Gao-Rael takes on the Tiger in suppression with his spitfire.  DOUBLE CRIT! The Tigers head is blown off!  With his last order of the game, he sends in his Kumotail and grabs back the console….. NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Final Result

Doug Partial Victory (2 VP, 2 OP)

Stuart Loss (0 VP, 1 OP)

Victory really did swing from 3-1 to me (my Tiger was also next to his HVT) on the last 2 orders to 2-1 to Doug.  What a game! Well played!

Game 2

  • Opponent: Mike “Light Bulb” Evans
  • Faction: Ariadna
  • Mission: Tic Tac Toe
  • List: A

I had practiced this mission the most and had designed list A for this!  With my EVO Hacker on the table I was getting a +3 to all WP rolls for the consoles.  The plan was to go down the right flank getting a link straight across and getting the end console.  The only issue is the middle left console was on the top of a huge building.  I won initiate and took first turn.  I set up my Guilang and a mine on the rooftop and a hidden Ninja!  He sets up and puts a prone Camo token and lands an inferior infiltrating prone Grunt on the roof!  As my hold back… I drop my Kanren use minelayer to place a Sniffer on the roof! (As it’s not a weapon it can be deployed in 8” of an opponent)

Turn 1 Yu Jing

The Kuang Shi run around.  Then the Sensor bot sends out a PING! and discovers the Camo’d Chasseur on the roof and a Camo’d Foxtrot behind the building.  Next I move out the Guilang to see the Chasseur and surprise shot him.  He decides to fire back with a pistol and gets put down.  Next I move the Ninja out of hidden and grab the roof top console.  Next its time for a dirty Ninja move.  Staying prone he moves 2” keeping out of LoF of the Grunt but opting NOT to use stealth.  The Grunt has to ARO change face and the Ninja moves swiftly into base to base then sticks him with a DA CCW in the next order!

Next I walk in the Tiger Spitfire.  He moves up and guns down the revealed foxtrot.  The Guilang moved up on the roof to the edge and gets a long range shot and the back of a Maverick over a wall but misses.  I then put the Tiger and Guilang on suppression (the Guiland takes a couple of long rage shots back but is missed).

My TR HMG takes a long range shot and takes out a Sniper on the roof, and sets up to cover across the table.

Turn 1 Ariadna

Mike starts by running his Extremely Impetuous Irmandihnos out towards the Tiger and gets gunned down.  He then moves out a Spetsnaz in Camo and surpise shots the Tiger and puts him down.  He recamo’s and then repeats vs the Guilang and puts him down, then Camo’s again!  He next moves up his Maverick and gets up to the console closest to him on my left and flips it, thn goes on supression!  He moves up his Antipode pack to help cover the colsole.  All of this takes all of his orders.

Turn 2 Yu Jing

With my first wave repelled I go to plan B… always the Rui Shi.  I load it with Assisted Fire and set it off.  It takes 2 orders to get up then takes out an Antipode which breaks the G:Sync (the other 2 are more than 8” apart) and makes the last two IMM-2.  The Rui Shi then guns down the Maverick and continues to move taking out a T2 Sniper on the roof.  With not much left to do I place the Rui Shi on Supression.  Then with my smaller second combat group I move up the Ninja on the roof top and take a really long range shot with his Tac Bow to a prone guy on a roof and put an arrow through his head!  Apparently that was his Lt.

Turn 2 Arianda

With only limited options, down to about 6 units and in loss of lieutenant he moved up a ref units and takes a long range shot onto the Ninja on the roof managing to put him down.  With the only a few orders he can only shift around units.

Turn 3 Yu Jing

First up the Sensor bot moves and grabs the closest console on my right side.  I then walk on the Tiger soldier Assault Hacker and grab the console on Mikes half of the table next to my Rui Shi.  Next the Rui Shi goes on a killing spree!  It moves up, takes down a 112, then guns down the Spetsnaz with his MSV2 and Assisted fire, then moves down the back line killing another couple of line troops and a Cameronian.

Turn 3 Arianda

With only camo marker left – the Arianda forces go into retreat and LoL again and that’s the game!

Game 3

  • Opponent: Chris “MeekRebel” Hobday
  • Faction: Nomad
  • Mission: Capture and Protect
  • List B

We meet again! Chris and I are regular foes.  Like Superman and Lex Luthor, Batman and the Joker, Tom and Jerry… We have played each other so many times it’s difficult for us to surprise each other any more…  Chris was on his home turf with vanilla Nomad.  The gloves were off in this game… and then we looked at the table… this was going to be nuts!

I won initiative (again 3/3) and decided to go first so I could hit hard with Shinobu.  I set up holding Shibobu as my hold back.  Then Chris sets up his anti Shinobu web of 2 Moran’s each with 2 Koala’s.  I decide to take the risk a drop Shinobu right onto the beacon and make the roll.  Chris’s holdback is Kusanagi!  Kusanagi and Shinobu have a history!  This was gonna get bitchy.

Turn 1 Yu Jing

First up my Monk rungs about a bit out of LoF and throws some smoke.  Next I move on the left hand console.  I have set up around it a Guilang minelayer and mine, a Kanren with 2 Madtraps and a Ninja Killer hacker 1mm away.  There is however a Moran nearby who has planted a Koala just out of 8″ range (as you can’t deploy a weapon that can target an enemy in deployment).  So first up the TO Ninja move 1mm to the console.  No ARO’s.  The Ninja then reveals from marker and flips the console.  This however triggers the ARO of a Zero Killer Hacker who was camo’d 7” away behind a wall and blows his brain out with Skull Buster! Not a good start.  Next up my Kanren throws out a Holoecho and sets of one Koala.  He then moves again throwing a Mad Trap and setting of the second Koala.  Shinobu is now free of Koalas where she is hidden, but Kusanigi is sitting prone on a crate overlooking her position!  So I decide that I need to remove Kusanagi – but this is where I realise how limiting the table is for S4 based units.  The only path my Rui Shi can take will cross in 8” of his Moran (who is inside a building, with another camo token).  So Plan B – I decide to take the long game and not reveal Shinobu this turn.  Chris however has Pi-well who has Sensor and a couple of 8 point sniffer REMs… So I put my efforts into taking Pi-Well down.  The Rui Shi take a couple of shots at him.  Pi-Well ARM saves the first burst.  Goes down on 1 Level unconscious on the second.  Now I only have 1 order left and he has a G: Sync servant behing Pi-Well ready to heal him.  So I place the last burst into Pi-Well and put him down.

With my last irregular order I use a command token to convert it to regular and switch the assisted fire onto the TR HMG

Turn 1 Nomads

With 16 orders (and only the loss of Pi-Well and 2 Koala’s) Chris was running strong.  He moves up the Zero and drops the Rui Shi in one shot!  The Moran comes out of his building and gets gunned down by my Kanren, but then another Zero materialises and puts him down.  Next up he moves up his Veritigo Zond which has been buffed with assisted fire into LoF of my 8 Point flash pulse REM.  I’ve set a trap though as right behind the REM is my Raiden HRL who ARO’s the Zond and the Zond shoots him back – and the Raiden eats an AP+DA missile!  The Zond then finishes off the flash pulse bot.  Next Kusanagi – who is just showing off now.  Stands up and shoots at the TR HMG.  4 dice vs 8’s against 4 dice vs 8’s – Kusangi wins and the Yaokong Husong TR HMG goes down.  She does a jump off the contained (super hero landing – tough on the knees) and moves up the table.  Chris then drops a Meteor Zond on the other side of the table and moved around past my downed Rui Shi taking out my Zhanshi hacker and Zhanshi Lt!!!!  Kusanagi then backs up a bit (which is a shame as her but was exposed to Shinobu).

Turn 2 Yu Jing

My ARO game has folded like cheap paper.  I’m down to 6 orders.  I use 2 command tokens to group up the survivors.  Then I make a mistake (Shell Shock – p.s. its only as I write the blog that I actually now remember this!), I think I’m in Loss of Lieutenant….. Forgetting that my Pheasant is Chain of Command!!!!!

The monk runs and eats a missile from the Vertigo Zond.  Next up Yuriko Oda steps up and shoots Kusangi with her PanzerFaust and manages to hit, but she makes 2 out of 3 ARM saves and goes NWI.  I take a surprise shot at the Meteor Zond with the Guilang but it saves its ARM!  Finally, Shinobu spends one order to grab the beacon and then I place her in suppression.

Turn 2 Nomads

Still with 15 orders…. Kusanagi steps up and guns down Yuriko.  Then he sends in the only person in the world not afraid of Shinobu – the Krakot! The Krakot then makes Shinobu eat 2 chain rifles!  She goes down.  The Meteor Zond guns down the Gulang.  Then the zeros move in, press the console button, grab the beacon and pass it back to Kusanagi who carries it back into her DZ.

Turn 3 Yu Jing

The lone surviving Pheasant runs away in retreat…. Game ends….

Final Result

Chris Complete Victory (3 VP 10 OP)

Final Standings

Well done to Chris who due to his crushing defeat of the Jade Empire went up to 4th place!  Also well done to our fellow Kentish Rogue Stuart Pollit who got 11th in his first major tournament.  I however languished in 12th!

Yu Jing is still a new faction to me in a way.  I’ve always played JSA and now I’m wondering is I’ve tried with List B to play Yu Jing too much like JSA.  List A worked out much better and I guess played more to the strengths of Yu Jing with the Tigers, Guilang’s and cheap orders form the Kuang Shi.

Top 3 places went to 1st Chris “Puttleflump” Penfold (Military Orders), 2nd Dan ‘Epsolon” Barber (Tohaa) and 3rd Rob “Bobman” Neal (Corregidor)

A great day of gaming – and a steep learning curve for Yu Jing!  Despite this defeat, the Jade Empire will rise once again!

Painting Competition

This was won by the excellent yellow Yu Jing of Andy Cherry!  They were stunning!
