UK Masters Part 1

On the 24th of September, 38 players deployed to Birmingham with one mission…

The tables

22 tables had been set up, bought down by various groups and players.  It was great to see some tables utilising special terrain rules which really added to the game.  Although looking deceptively simple Ian Woods tables were fiendishly complicated with the various terrain elements.  Dan Barber bought down his excellent tables with hinged doors and roofs.  A great diversity of tables and no two played the same!

My Army

With such a variety of missions I decided to play two quite different armies.  List A was a rapid moving army designed to grab objectives and run!  List B was a killer army – with one goal in mind – murder!

Game 1

  • List: A
  • Mission: Supplies
  • Opponent: Adam Watts
  • Faction: Imperial State Service

A real grudge match – the insurgent JSA vs the oppressive ISS.  Honour would be served!  I won the initiative roll and took 1st turn.  Adam took deployment and to go second.

Turn 1 – JSA

Taking the first turn – Adam took 2 orders from my Biker combat group. First Yo Jimbo took his impetuous order and popped smoke over the west crate.  Next I revealed my Ninja Killer Hacker prone behind the west crate.  She WPed the box for the supplies but was pinned in place by Adams Rui Shi which had deployed on the West flank.  I loaded up supportware on my own Rui Shi and pushed it up the flank taking his on at long range and putting it down!  Running low on orders the Ninja backed up to the door way of a nearby building but didn’t have the orders to go in.  On the east side of the board I moved up my Keisotsu link.  Lead by Yuriko Odo they moved up and gained LoF on Adams Crane Rank in his Fire team.  Confident about her skills I popped a double panzerfaust at him – but despite having the better chances she was put down straight to dead by the Cranes HMG.  Realising I wasn’t going to win that one, I revealed Saito Togan and popped smoke over the crate and grabbed the box with my Kempetai.

Turn 1 – ISS

Straight away Adam activated his Sophatech and its servant bot.  The servant but patched up the Rui Shi and off it went!  He moved out knowing his cover wouldn’t help as my Rui Shi still had supportware and lined up on my Ninja.  Putting 3 shots into the ninja and 1 onto the Rui Shi – but my luck held and the Ninja dodges into the building and my Rui Shi put his down again!  The link teams now squared up.  My Kemeptai with the box was in danger – he had the crate as cover.  The Crane rank fire onto him but he managed to dodge prone behind the crate and out of sight.  He changed tac and his Sniper in the link team took out Yo Jimbo.  He then moved his sniper to take on my TR HMG – and in the F2F roll we tied!  He tried to take some shots on Saito Togan who dodged back.  Then came the surprise!  He walked a Garuda Tacbot right in behind my Rui Shi and put a board shotgun through it!  Finally he managed to get to an angle to take down my Kempetai, who dropped the box

Turn 2 – JSA

I held two boxes but was in the open.  My Ninja couldn’t get back to my lines as Adams link team had the diagonal axis of the board covered by his sniper!  Yo Jimbo my smoke was down – so options were limited.  First I had to deal with the Tacbot.  Asuka Kisuragi was more than up to the task and moved across gunning him down.  Next I threw smoke down over the Kempetai link and moved them to pick up the box – but as I moved them he reveal his on Ninja killer hacker, as my hacker wasn’t the link leader he was easy pickings and had his head imploded!  I moved up my Aragoto Hacker, with his 8-6 move I hoped to grabe the box – but to do so he had to cross the ZoC of the Ninja Hacker – and he didn’t make it!

Turn 2 – ISS

Adam lead off with the Kuang Shi – moving up through the buildings.  The Kuang Shi moved up and went after the Ninja – but again he managed to dodge back out of the building.  He then threw his Yudbot servant out into the open to Engineer the Rui Shi again!  I managed to shot him down but the Rui shi was back up!  He moved in at took down my Ninja.  He then started to moved up the table with his Link team – throwing down smoke for cover and trying to get in closer.  He then moved up his Ninja hacker tried to WP the box but failed.

Turn 3 – JSA

We both now had limited options.  First I had to put down the Rui Shi.  I realised I had completely forgotten my Raiden HRL!  He popped a surprise shot and blew the Rui Shi into scrap!  (Annoyingly I’d forgotted about him and missed his ARO vs the Rui Shi in the last turn!)  Next Asuka moved up, gunning down Kuang Shi on the way, but she couldn’t move past the fire lane from Adam’s Sniper.  I spend the next few orders running the last box back into my DZ and hiding!

Turn 3 – ISS

The Kuang Shi moved up but Asuka managed to gun a couple down.  The TR HMG managed to keep Adam’s link team from moving up the board and did a forward observe on an unconscious trooper for his Telemetry Classified.  He moved his Ninja over and this time managed to WP the crate!  He then popped smoke from his Celestial Guard over the dropped supply and moved his last surviving Kuang shi onto the box!  For the win!

Final Result – Loss

Adam ISS 3 TP, 7 OP (2 Supplies 2 OP, More Supplies 3 OP, Secured HVT 1 VP, Telemetry 1 VP), 249 VP

Stuart JSA 0 TP, 1 OP (1 Supply), 108 VP

Game 2

  • List: B
  • Mission: Antenna Field
  • Opponent: Glenn Brunmar
  • Faction: HaqqIslam

This looked like an interesting match-up.  Glenn has a range of interesting troops including a HI’s worst enemy…. Mutts!  I won Initiative and decided to go first.

Turn 1 JSA

I was hoping to lead off with Shinobu Kitsune but Glenn had deployed very defensively.  He had Mutts on the left and right and a BIG Al Fasid!  I decided to lead with the Haramaki link team.  They moved freely up the board with no ARO’s and took the centre ground taking out a Daylami with Panzerfaust on a roof with my Haramaki Combi.  I moved two Haramaki onto the roof top to guard the centre antenna.  I also took a shot at what I thought was a line trooper but was one of three holo-echos!  With the other combat group I moved my specialists up.  I placed my FO Keisotsu prone being the closest antenna.  I then moved my Hacker up to the eastern antenna and moved the Rui Shi to cover placing the Hacker and Rui Shi on suppression.

Turn 1 Haqq

Glenn moved up his Mutts and dropped smoke down.  He then moved his Ayyar with holoecho’s up the table.  He popped around the side of a building and used surprise shot level 2 to take down my hacker.  My Rui Shi scored a hit but he made the ARM roll.  He next moved up his Janissary Doctor under smoke to take the West Antenna.  He threw smoke over his own Antenna and placed his Rafiq remote on it.

End of round 1 – 2 Points to Glenn

Turn 2 JSA

It was time to hit back hard!  I started with my TR HMG which shot at in Janissary and got critted!  Next I move the Rui Shi in for a shot and took down the Ayyar.  I next moved in Shinobu in on the Al Fasid.  I had to throw smoke and them move away until the Al Fasid bloked the LoF of his mine on Shibnobu.  In her next  action she moved in and cut him in half.  I then moved my Rui Shi back and shot down the Jannisary.  I moved the Haramaki link in to clear his REM off the antenna and then tried to shoot down the Mutts but they managed to throw down smoke – but later I would realise my mistake in moving them off the roof!

Turn 2 Haqq

Glenn had limited orders but he made good use of them and played the mission.  The mutts once again put smoke down although I managed to take one more out.  He then moved up and repaired his Rafiq REM. He then moved his mutts in on my link team.  I managed to take them both out but he hit three of my team with his E/Marat and immobilised one of them.  He then moved his camo token – which was a Hawwa Hacker.  It managed to moved out of LoF of my link team but they discovered him.  He then headed up to the roof and took the uncontested central antenna.  I tried to ARO dodge with Shinobu to dodge the mine – but she rolled a 20 and got cooked!

End of round 2 – 4 OP to Glenn

Turn 3 JSA

I now needed to fight back!  My Haramaki with Combi Rifle took down the Rasiq and the Najjarun Engineer with one split burst.  I then sent the Haramaki up to the roof (using stealth so not to get hacked on their way!).  With one hit the Haramaki ML took down the Hawwa and then Coup de Grace for a Classified!  I needed the max points so I moved my Tokusetsu Engineer and Yaozao servant all the way up to the roof top.  To help protect him – I placed him prone and put the Yaozao infront of him.  Now I had to hold!

Turn 3 Haqq

Glenn has only four orders left.  He stood up what I thought was a sniper, but it was a Hafza with lightshot gun!  He was at longe range but if he managed to shoot my Yaozao the template would go over my Tokusetsu!  He needed 6’s on two dice but missed!!!  My Haramaki ML took him out.  In a last moved he bought up a Djanbazan HMG and took out the Yaozao but again the Haramaki ML put him down….

Final Result Partial Victory

Glenn Haqqislam 0 TP, 4 OP (2 OP 1st turn, 2 OP 2nd turn), 48 VP

Stuart JSA 2 TP, (2 OP 3rd Turn, 2 OP Holding the centre antenna, 1 OP Classified), 208 VP

Game 3

  • List: A
  • Mission: Comms Centre
  • Opponent: Aaron Hooks
  • Faction: Yu Jing

Another grudge match –the JSA rebels vs the Yu Jing imperialists! I lost the initiative roll.  Aaron took 1st turn

Turn 1 Yu Jing

Aaron moved up and secured one comm array with a Tokusetsu Engineer and another with a Camo’d Gulang FO.  From his setup he didn’t have any clear lines of for on any of my troopers so moved to cover.

Turn 1 JSA

Luck was with me.  I had decided to deploy Saito Togan past the 24” line and made the PH -3 roll.  Saito started next to the building which has his Bao sniper.  Saito threw smoke and then killed an Aragoto Hacker and then a Shaolin Monk.  He then entered the building and killed his Zanshi Luitenant!  I didn’t have enough orders left to get to the roof and kill the Bao Troop.  Yo Jimbo then went on a rampage down the table.  He put down smoke grenades as he went and took out a Celestial Guard and when into B2B with the TR HMG REM and Pheasant Rank who was Aaron’s Chain of Command!  In a close fight with us both rolling 2 dice Yo Jimbo cut down the Phesant and finished still in B2B with the TR HMG.

Turn 2 Yu Jing

Aaron was in Loss of Lieutenant.  He spent 4 command tokens trading up orders.  He moved a Zanshi around and took on Saito and scored a crit taking him down!  He then revealed his Hac Tao HMG near Yo Jimbo.  He took out Asuka Kisuragi with a long range HMG shot and then using his pistol he shot at Yo Jimbo, scoring a hit with the first shot but on the second he took out both Yo Jimbo and his own TR Bot!

Turn 2 JSA

I decided to best way to face off v’s the Hac Tao was with the Rui Shi and moved it up to take him on – and in one burst put him down!  Next I moved up the Keisotsu link team WPing two consoles on the way through.  I then used Yuriko’s Panzerfaust on the Bao Sniper and took him out.  I revealed my Ninja Killer Hacker and WPed another console.

Turn 3 Yu Jing

Aaron was in retreat and couldn’t do much more. So the game ended there. I went to check for secure HVT and realised I had forgotten to place mine so we decided that I couldn’t score it.

Final Result – Complete Victory

Aaron Yu Jing 0 TO, 1 OP (Classifed) 56 VP

Stuart JSA 3 TP, 9 OP (More Consoles 4, More Specialists Killed 3 OP, More Army Points Killed 2 OP), 213 VP
